Child Support Case Management Specialist

Long Island City, United States City of New York Full time

Company Overview

Position Overview

The Office of Child Support Services (OCSS) serves as the initial access point for custodial parents seeking assistance within the child support framework. This role is crucial for custodial parents who are recipients of Cash Assistance, ensuring they receive the necessary support services.

When the location of the noncustodial parent is identified, cases are forwarded to family court to commence legal proceedings aimed at establishing child support obligations and/or confirming paternity.

Families depend on our agency for effective guidance in securing owed financial support, utilizing all available resources to ensure collection.

Under the guidance of the Supervisor I (Social Services), the Caseworker operates with a degree of autonomy to conduct client interviews and investigations, responding to referrals from the Family Independence Administration (FIA) to locate absent parents.

This is essential for maintaining the applicant's eligibility for assistance.

Upon locating the absent parent, pertinent information is sent to DSS Court Services to facilitate the preparation of court summons for the absent parent to confirm paternity and establish child support obligations.

The OCSS is actively seeking to hire six (6) Caseworkers to fulfill the role of CASE MANAGEMENT WORKER, who will:

  • Evaluate the necessity of interviews and conduct them to finalize child support applications, enhance case records, and locate noncustodial parents.
Schedule follow-up interviews and related activities as required. Client interactions may occur in person or via telephone.

  • Perform thorough system searches across various applications based on leads gathered during client interviews; develop and pursue leads through system searches and contacts to locate noncustodial parents.
  • Collaborate with other OCSS departments and external entities to gather necessary information and documentation.
  • Ensure all essential documentation is prepared for court referral to establish parentage and/or secure an order of support.
  • Comprehend and comply with established operational procedures and guidelines to prevent delays in court referrals and ensure the accuracy of completed tasks.
Prepare and finalize standard forms and supplementary documentation to transition cases from the Borough Office to Court.

  • Maintain worker logs to document interviews conducted throughout the day.
  • Engage in special projects and perform other permissible Caseworker functions within the program area.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Additional Information:

In accordance with Section 424-a of the New York State Social Services Law, an authorized agency must inquire whether a candidate for employment with child-care responsibilities has been the subject of an indicated child abuse and maltreatment report on file with the State Central Register.

Screening through the State Central Register will be conducted prior to considering candidates for the Caseworker position.

Candidates with a history of indicated child abuse and maltreatment reports will not be assigned to positions involving child-care responsibilities.

Employees with such a report may face reassignment or termination from their Caseworker roles.
