Child Support Case Management Specialist

Long Island City, United States City of New York Full time

Company Overview

Position Overview

The Office of Child Support Services (OCSS) serves as the primary access point for custodial parents seeking assistance within the child support framework. This office plays a critical role in ensuring that custodial parents who are recipients of Cash Assistance receive the necessary support services.

Custodial parents are systematically referred for child support services as a prerequisite for obtaining full benefits for their households.

Upon identifying the noncustodial parent's location, cases are forwarded to family court to initiate legal proceedings for establishing child support obligations and/or confirming paternity.

Families depend on our agency for expert guidance in the collection of owed funds, utilizing all available resources to secure these payments.

Under the direction of the Supervisor I (Social Services), the Caseworker operates with a degree of autonomy to conduct client interviews and investigations based on referrals from the Family Independence Administration (FIA) aimed at locating absent parents legally responsible for child support.

This process is essential for maintaining the applicant's eligibility for assistance.

Once the absent parent is located, the relevant information is sent to DSS Court Services to prepare the necessary summons for court appearance to confirm paternity and establish child support obligations.

The OCSS is actively seeking to hire six individuals for the role of Case Management Worker who will:

  • Evaluate the necessity of interviews and conduct them to complete child support applications, update case records, and locate noncustodial parents.
Schedule follow-up interviews and activities as required. Client interactions may occur in person or via telephone.

  • Perform thorough system searches across various applications based on leads gathered during client interviews; develop and pursue leads through system inquiries and contacts to locate noncustodial parents.
  • Collaborate with other OCSS departments and external entities to gather necessary information and documentation.
  • Ensure all required documentation is prepared for court referral to establish paternity and/or secure a support order.
  • Comprehend and adhere to established operational procedures and guidelines to avoid delays in court referrals and ensure the accuracy of completed tasks.
Prepare and finalize standard forms and supporting documentation to transition cases from the Borough Office to Court.

  • Maintain detailed logs of interviews conducted throughout the day.
  • Engage in special projects and perform other allowable Caseworker functions within the program area.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university recognized by regional, national, professional, or specialized accrediting bodies acknowledged by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Additional Information:

Section 424-a of the New York State Social Services Law mandates that authorized agencies inquire whether candidates for employment with child-care responsibilities have been subjects of indicated child abuse and maltreatment reports on file with the State Central Register.

Screening through the State Central Register will be conducted prior to considering candidates for employment as Caseworkers.

Candidates with a history of indicated child abuse and maltreatment reports will not be assigned to positions requiring child-care responsibilities.

Employees with such a report may face reassignment or termination from their Caseworker positions.
