Responsibilities

Gathers necessary documentation and executes unit-level fire safety education initiatives. Engages with the community to enhance understanding of wildland urban interface challenges, including fire safety. Investigates the causes and origins of wildfires utilizing scientific methods. Reviews, organizes, and shares information related to wildfire prevention and mitigation efforts. Under the guidance of senior prevention personnel, assists in developing the wildfire prevention and mitigation strategy, as well as the community wildfire protection plan. Works collaboratively with fire management teams across various program areas to create a unified strategy for reducing wildfire hazards and risks in the wildland urban interface.

Conditions of Employment

U.S. Citizenship Required Federal payments must be made via Direct Deposit Successful completion of a probationary period may be required A background security investigation will be mandatory for all new hires. Appointment will depend on the successful completion of this investigation and favorable adjudication. Male applicants born after 12/31/1959 must be registered under the Military Selective Service Act to be eligible for appointment. A valid state driver's license is required for this position. This role is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing as a condition of employment. A verified positive drug test will disqualify applicants. Pre-employment and annual medical screening and physical fitness testing are required.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: (Refer to OPM Operating Manual, Qualification Standards for Technical and Medical Support Positions and Individual Occupational Requirements for GS-0456: Wildland Firefighter Series; and NWCG/Interagency Fire Program Management Qualifications Standards and Guide)

GS-07 : Requires 1 year of specialized work experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, implementing strategies and planning activities to support wildland fire prevention and mitigation; coordinating educational programs related to wildland fire with tribes, other agencies, institutions, and/or communities; assisting in the development and execution of prevention campaigns for wildfire causes; and supporting wildland fire investigations.

FIREFIGHTER RETIREMENT COVERAGE : This position is covered under the secondary/administrative firefighter special retirement provisions. Eligibility for special retirement coverage will depend on the individual’s work history.

Prior Wildland Firefighting Experience : This is a secondary-administrative position within an organization focused on firefighting, and is part of an established career path. Prior firefighting experience is a MANDATORY PREREQUISITE.

Physical Demands: This role requires arduous exertion for extended periods, including running, walking, climbing, kneeling, and lifting heavy items.

Work Environment: Involves working in forest, range, and desert environments with steep terrain and extreme weather conditions. Personal protective equipment is mandatory.
