Position Overview

The Produce Team Leader is responsible for providing comprehensive leadership to the produce department. This role encompasses all facets of daily operations, including profitability, expense management, purchasing, merchandising, labor oversight, regulatory compliance, and various special projects as assigned.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that all team members, including supervisors and associates, are held accountable for delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Creating a positive work atmosphere characterized by teamwork, mutual respect, and high morale.
  • Making critical hiring and separation decisions.
  • Monitoring and achieving sales, purchasing, and labor objectives.
  • Maintaining appropriate product assortment, merchandising standards, and inventory control.
  • Establishing and nurturing collaborative relationships with department leaders and vendors.
  • Staying informed about competitors and industry trends to sustain a competitive edge.
  • Setting and achieving exemplary standards of retail execution.
  • Directing team members to meet customer needs and ensuring prompt responses to inquiries.
  • Recruiting, training, developing, mentoring, and motivating team members to maintain a high-performance team and reduce turnover.
  • Conducting timely and thorough performance evaluations.
  • Consistently communicating and embodying the company’s vision and goals.
Required Skills
  • In-depth knowledge of industry trends and competitor activities.
  • Advanced understanding of products, purchasing, pricing, merchandising, and inventory management.
  • Food safety certification; commitment to obtaining certification within six months if not currently certified.
  • Excellent interpersonal, motivational, team-building, and customer relationship skills.
  • Ability to instruct others positively and constructively.
  • Strong product knowledge, including regulatory and safety policies and procedures.
  • Proficient mathematical skills for evaluating financial performance, monitoring profitability, and managing inventory.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, decision-making skills, and the ability to prioritize and delegate effectively.
  • Proficiency in email, Microsoft Office, and operations-related applications.
Experience Requirements
  • A minimum of 24 months of retail experience, including at least 12 months in a leadership role.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • In an 8-hour workday: standing/walking for 6-8 hours.
  • Hand use: single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, and pulling.
  • Work involves bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching.
  • Exposure to FDA-approved cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to work in temperatures up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Capability to work in wet and cold environments.
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment, including box cutters and electric pallet jacks.
