Position Overview

The Shift Leader plays a crucial role in the success of Essen Bakery by supporting management in executing daily operations during scheduled shifts. This position involves leading the team and managing various administrative responsibilities. The Shift Leader is responsible for ensuring that staff members deliver a positive experience to our valued customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Exemplifies integrity and knowledge that enhance the culture, values, and mission of Essen Bakery. Maintains composure during busy periods to uphold operational standards and set a positive example for team members.
  • Proactively assesses customer and store needs by observing the environment and responding to cues. Effectively communicates essential information to staff to foster a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Organizes staff schedules based on anticipated business levels, ensuring all roles are filled as needed while adhering to labor cost targets.
  • Assists in the recruitment and training of new team members, providing constructive feedback and encouragement to promote successful performance.
  • Contributes to a positive workplace by identifying changes in staff morale and performance, communicating these observations to management.
  • Fosters a learning environment by delivering clear, respectful, and timely coaching to team members to ensure operational excellence.
  • Delivers exceptional customer service by maintaining a helpful attitude and connecting with customers to understand and meet their needs.
  • Builds strong relationships with staff by recognizing individual motivations and addressing their needs and concerns.
  • Directs staff to various workstations during shifts to optimize service speed and efficiency.
  • Ensures that team members meet cleanliness and service standards.
  • Oversees store operations during shifts, organizing and monitoring opening and closing duties.
  • Adheres to operational policies and procedures, including cash handling and safety protocols, to ensure a secure environment for all staff.
  • Conducts bank runs as necessary to maintain appropriate cash levels.
  • Opens and closes the café as required.
  • Ensures compliance with policies regarding waste and employee purchases.
  • Maintains consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Delivers high-quality beverages consistently by following established recipes and presentation standards while adhering to health and safety guidelines.
  • Recognizes and celebrates individual and team achievements using available organizational tools and collaborating with management to find innovative recognition methods.
  • Utilizes operational tools effectively to achieve excellence during shifts.
  • Participates in scheduled team and management meetings, offering suggestions for improvement.
  • Provides support to colleagues as needed to ensure a positive customer experience and efficient operations.

Qualifications

  • Strong customer service orientation and experience.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a customer service role within a fast-paced restaurant, coffee shop, or bakery environment.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Google Workspace, Word, Excel, and Canva; experience in creating documents and marketing materials is a plus.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Leadership abilities with a focus on team motivation and management.
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and early morning shifts.

Compensation

  • Hourly wage of $18-$20 plus tips.
  • Comprehensive primary healthcare benefits.
  • Paid Time Off accrued at a rate of 3 hours per payroll, redeemable after 28 weeks.
