POSITION SUMMARY:

The Inpatient Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering direct patient care in alignment with organizational policies and compliance standards, including those of contracted healthcare facilities. The role encompasses a variety of clinical practices, such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapies, apheresis, and ultrafiltration. The Inpatient RN collaborates with hospital staff to ensure high-quality patient care and a positive healthcare experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates under limited supervision, utilizing extensive knowledge to execute a wide range of clinical tasks, including but not limited to hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, continuous renal replacement therapy, and apheresis.
  • Supervises and guides Patient Care Technicians and administrative personnel; provides training and support to ICU staff regarding CRRT.
  • Manages direct patient care for assigned individuals within the Inpatient Renal Replacement and Apheresis Services, ensuring appropriate treatment modalities are followed as prescribed.
  • Evaluates patient responses to treatment, making necessary adjustments to care plans in consultation with credentialed physicians. Communicates any issues to the Inpatient Program Manager and relevant healthcare team members.
  • Delivers safe and effective care in a timely manner, ensuring all patient needs are met.
  • Provides clear and organized shift reports for patients, employing critical thinking to adjust patient schedules based on clinical needs.
  • Oversees the administration and monitoring of intradialytic transfusions, ensuring proper documentation and communication of any adverse reactions.
  • Collaborates with physicians and healthcare team members to interpret and coordinate daily patient care plans, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Initiates communication with nursing staff and hospital personnel as necessary.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of all treatment information in patient records and hospital systems.
  • Ensures cleanliness and disinfection of dialysis equipment and treatment areas between patient sessions, adhering to established protocols.
  • Conducts all preparatory tasks for dialysis treatment and documents actions as required.
  • Performs necessary safety tests and equipment checks on dialysis machines.
  • Utilizes all related equipment safely and efficiently, addressing minor issues as they arise.
  • Completes ongoing participation in quality assurance initiatives and attends scheduled staff meetings.
  • Acts as a resource for hospital staff regarding dialysis-related patient care and equipment issues.
  • Reports any unusual incidents or concerns to management as per established protocols.
  • Adheres to the Code of Business Conduct and all relevant policies and regulations.
  • Engages in various projects as assigned by direct supervisors.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Position requires interaction with patients, clinicians, hospital staff, and physicians, with travel between facilities as needed.
  • On-call rotation is required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Potential exposure to infectious materials and diseases is present.
  • Direct patient care responsibilities may involve heavy lifting and moving of patients and equipment.
  • May require lifting of supplies up to 30 lbs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees and directs Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff, providing guidance and education as necessary.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • Maintains knowledge of advancements in nephrology, particularly regarding inpatient care.
  • Certification in Nephrology Nursing or Apheresis Nursing is encouraged.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Minimum of one year of RN experience required.
  • At least six months of nephrology experience required before independent practice.
  • Strong assessment skills for critically ill patients are essential.
  • ICU experience is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Completion of relevant training in care for ESRD patients is required.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications are preferred.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Exhibits leadership capabilities and the ability to supervise others effectively.
  • Successful completion of Nurses Technical Training is required.
