POSITION SUMMARY:

The Inpatient Renal Nurse delivers direct patient care in alignment with organizational policies and procedures, including compliance programs and hospital regulations. The role encompasses a variety of practices, notably hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapies, apheresis, and ultrafiltration. The Inpatient RN collaborates with hospital staff to ensure high-quality patient care and enhance the patient experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates with limited supervision, applying extensive knowledge to execute a wide range of tasks, including direct patient care across multiple modalities such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, continuous renal replacement therapy, and apheresis.
  • Supervises and guides Patient Care Technicians and clerical personnel; provides education and direction to ICU staff regarding CRRT.
  • Responsible for the direct care of assigned patients within the Inpatient Renal Replacement and Apheresis Services, ensuring appropriate treatment techniques are administered as prescribed for each modality.
  • Evaluates patient responses to treatment, making necessary adjustments to care plans as indicated by the attending physician. Communicates any issues to the Inpatient Program Manager, physician, and relevant nursing staff.
  • Delivers safe and effective care promptly and efficiently.
  • Provides organized and clear shift reports for patients during assigned shifts, applying critical thinking to adjust patient schedules based on clinical needs.
  • Manages the implementation, administration, monitoring, and documentation of patients' responses to prescribed intradialytic transfusions, including notifying the physician and blood supplier of any adverse reactions.
  • Collaborates with physicians and healthcare team members to interpret, modify, and coordinate daily patient care plans, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Initiates communication with FMS facility nursing staff and relevant hospital personnel as necessary.
  • Accurately documents all treatment information in patient records and hospital documentation as required.
  • Maintains cleanliness and disinfection of dialysis machines, chairs, and surrounding areas between treatments, adhering to inpatient renal services protocols.
  • Conducts all preparatory tasks for dialysis treatment and documents actions appropriately.
  • Performs necessary pre-treatment dialysis machine alarm testing.
  • Operates all related equipment safely and effectively, providing minor troubleshooting as needed and efficiently utilizing supplies to minimize waste.
  • Understands and executes dialysis/apheresis machine safety tests, equipment calibration, and compliance with documentation standards.
  • Engages in ongoing participation in Quality Assurance and Improvement activities.
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings and participates in training and orientation as assigned.
  • Acts as a resource for hospital staff regarding dialysis-related patient and equipment complications.
  • Reports any new or unusual incidents, information, or complaints to the inpatient manager as per Adverse Event Report requirements.
  • Adheres to the Code of Business Conduct and all applicable company policies and regulations.
  • Assists with various projects as directed by the supervisor.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

  • Direct patient care involves interaction with patients, outpatient clinicians, hospital staff, and physicians, requiring travel between assigned hospitals and facilities.
  • Position requires on-call rotation, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Potential exposure to infectious materials and diseases is present.
  • Direct patient care responsibilities may involve heavy lifting and moving of patients and equipment exceeding 200 lbs (with assistance).
  • May require lifting chemical and water solutions of up to 30 lbs.
SUPERVISION:

  • Provides oversight and guidance to Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff; offers direction and education to ICU staff for CRRT.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Current state licensure is required.
  • Maintains knowledge of advancements in nephrology, particularly concerning inpatient care.
  • Certification in Nephrology Nursing or Apheresis Nursing is highly encouraged.
  • One year of RN experience is required, along with essential nursing skills.
  • A minimum of 6 months nephrology experience is required before working independently.
  • Demonstrated strong assessment skills for critically ill patients are essential.
  • ICU experience is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Completion of training in the care of ESRD patients is required.
  • BLS CPR certification is mandatory; ACLS CPR certification is preferred.
  • Exhibits organizational and time management skills, along with a commitment to ongoing education in Renal/Nephrology.
  • Demonstrates leadership abilities and capacity to supervise others.
  • Successful completion of Nurses Technical Training is required.
