POSITION SUMMARY:

The Inpatient Renal Nurse is responsible for delivering direct patient care in alignment with company protocols and the policies of affiliated healthcare facilities. This role encompasses a variety of clinical practices, including but not limited to hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapies, apheresis, and ultrafiltration. The Inpatient RN collaborates with hospital staff to ensure high-quality patient care and enhance the overall patient experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates under limited supervision, utilizing extensive knowledge to perform a wide range of clinical tasks, including direct patient care across various modalities such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, continuous renal replacement therapy, and apheresis.
  • Supervises and guides Patient Care Technicians and administrative personnel; provides training and support to ICU staff regarding CRRT.
  • Manages direct patient care for assigned individuals within the Inpatient Renal Replacement and Apheresis Services, ensuring appropriate treatment techniques are administered as prescribed for each modality.
  • Evaluates patient responses to treatment, making necessary adjustments to care plans in consultation with the credentialed physician. Communicates any issues or concerns to the Inpatient Program Manager and relevant healthcare team members.
  • Delivers care that is safe, effective, and timely, ensuring efficient management of patient schedules based on clinical needs.
  • Provides clear and organized shift reports for patients during assigned shifts, applying critical thinking to prioritize care for more critical patients.
  • Responsible for the administration, monitoring, and documentation of patients' responses to prescribed intradialytic transfusions, including timely notification of any adverse reactions.
  • Collaborates with physicians and healthcare team members to interpret and adjust the daily patient care plan, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Initiates communication with nursing staff and hospital personnel as necessary.
  • Accurately documents all treatment information in the patient record and hospital system as required.
  • Maintains cleanliness and disinfection of dialysis equipment and surrounding areas between treatments, adhering to established policies and procedures.
  • Prepares for dialysis treatments and documents all necessary actions appropriately.
  • Conducts required safety tests on dialysis machines prior to use.
  • Operates all related equipment safely and effectively, providing minor troubleshooting as needed.
  • Understands and performs necessary safety tests and documentation for dialysis machines, ensuring compliance with company standards.
  • Participates in quality assurance initiatives and attends scheduled staff meetings.
  • Engages in ongoing training and orientation as assigned, acting as a resource for hospital staff regarding dialysis-related patient and equipment issues.
  • Reports any unusual incidents or concerns to the inpatient manager in accordance with company protocols.
  • Adheres to the Code of Business Conduct and all relevant company policies and regulations.
  • Assists with various projects as directed by the supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This role involves direct patient interaction and requires travel between assigned facilities, as well as attendance at regional meetings and educational events.
  • On-call responsibilities may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Potential exposure to infectious materials and diseases is present.
  • The position necessitates physical strength for lifting and moving patients and equipment, as well as handling supplies weighing up to 30 lbs.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • Ongoing education in nephrology, particularly in relation to inpatient care.
  • Minimum one year of RN experience is required, with at least six months of nephrology experience before working independently.
  • Demonstrated strong assessment skills for critically ill patients; ICU experience is preferred.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications are required, with ACLS being preferred but not mandatory.
  • Exhibits leadership abilities and the capacity to supervise others effectively.
  • Completion of a technical training program for nursing is necessary.
