The Inpatient Renal Care Nurse is responsible for delivering direct patient care in alignment with organizational policies and procedures, including compliance programs and hospital regulations. The role encompasses a variety of clinical practices, such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapies, apheresis, and ultrafiltration. The Inpatient RN collaborates with hospital staff to ensure high-quality patient care and enhance the overall patient experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- With limited oversight, utilizes extensive knowledge to execute a wide range of tasks, including direct patient care across multiple treatment modalities such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, continuous renal replacement therapy, and apheresis.
- Supervises and guides Patient Care Technicians and administrative personnel; educates ICU staff regarding CRRT procedures.
- Manages direct patient care for assigned individuals within the Inpatient Renal Replacement and Apheresis Services, ensuring the appropriate treatment is administered as prescribed for each modality.
- Evaluates patient responses to therapeutic interventions, making necessary adjustments to treatment plans as directed by the attending physician. Communicates any issues to the Inpatient Program Manager, attending physician, and other relevant staff.
- Delivers safe and effective care promptly and efficiently.
- Provides organized and clear shift reports for patients during assigned shifts, employing critical thinking to adjust patient schedules based on clinical needs.
- Responsible for the administration, monitoring, and documentation of patients' responses to prescribed intradialytic transfusions, including notifying the physician and blood supplier of any adverse reactions.
- Collaborates with physicians and healthcare team members to interpret, modify, and coordinate daily patient care plans, ensuring continuity of care.
- Initiates communication with FMS facility nursing staff and relevant hospital personnel as required.
- Accurately documents all treatment information in patient records and hospital systems as necessary.
- Maintains cleanliness and disinfects dialysis equipment and surrounding areas between treatments in accordance with established policies.
- Conducts all preparatory tasks for dialysis treatment and documents appropriately.
- Performs required safety tests on dialysis machines prior to treatment.
- Operates all related equipment safely and effectively, providing minor troubleshooting as needed.
- Understands and conducts necessary safety tests and documentation for dialysis and apheresis equipment.
- Participates in Quality Assurance Improvement activities and attends scheduled staff meetings.
- Engages in staff training and orientation as assigned.
- Acts as a resource for hospital staff regarding dialysis-related patient and equipment issues.
- Reports any unusual incidents or concerns to the inpatient manager as per reporting requirements.
- Complies with the Code of Business Conduct and all applicable policies and regulations.
- Assists with various projects as directed by the supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- This position requires interaction with patients, clinicians, hospital staff, and physicians, necessitating travel between facilities and attendance at regional meetings.
- On-call rotation is required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Potential exposure to infectious materials and diseases.
- Direct patient care responsibilities involve heavy lifting and moving of patients and equipment.
- Employees must pass a color blindness test as a condition of employment, with accommodations considered as necessary.
- Current state licensure is required.
- Must stay informed on advancements in nephrology, particularly concerning inpatient care.
- Certification in Nephrology Nursing or Apheresis Nursing is highly encouraged.
- Minimum of one year of RN experience is required, with at least six months of nephrology experience before working independently.
- Strong assessment skills for critically ill patients are essential; ICU experience is preferred.
- BLS and ACLS CPR certifications are required or preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills are necessary.
- Completion of Nurses Technical Training is required.
