POSITION SUMMARY:

The Inpatient Renal Care Nurse is responsible for delivering direct patient care in alignment with company protocols and the policies of affiliated healthcare facilities. This role encompasses a variety of practices, including but not limited to hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapies, apheresis, and ultrafiltration. The Inpatient RN collaborates with hospital staff to ensure high-quality patient care and a positive healthcare experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates under limited supervision, applying extensive knowledge to execute a wide range of tasks, including direct patient care across multiple modalities such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, continuous renal replacement therapy, and apheresis.
  • Oversees and guides Patient Care Technicians and administrative personnel; provides education and direction to ICU staff regarding CRRT.
  • Accountable for the direct care of assigned patients within the Inpatient Renal Replacement and Apheresis Services, ensuring the appropriate treatment techniques are applied as prescribed.
  • Evaluates patient responses to treatment, making necessary adjustments to care plans as directed by qualified physicians. Communicates any issues to the Inpatient Program Manager and relevant healthcare team members.
  • Delivers safe and effective care promptly and efficiently.
  • Provides organized and concise reports during shift changes, utilizing critical thinking to adjust patient schedules based on urgent needs.
  • Responsible for the administration and monitoring of prescribed intradialytic transfusions, including the documentation of patient responses and reporting any adverse reactions.
  • Collaborates with physicians and healthcare team members to interpret and coordinate daily patient care plans, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Initiates communication with FMS facility nursing staff and hospital personnel as necessary.
  • Accurately documents all treatment information in patient records and hospital documentation as required.
  • Maintains cleanliness and disinfection of dialysis equipment and surrounding areas between treatments according to established protocols.
  • Conducts all preparatory tasks for dialysis treatment and documents appropriately.
  • Performs required safety tests on dialysis machines prior to treatment.
  • Utilizes all related equipment safely and effectively, providing minor troubleshooting as needed.
  • Understands and executes necessary safety tests and documentation standards for dialysis and apheresis equipment.
  • Engages in quality assurance initiatives and participates in scheduled staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Acts as a resource for hospital staff regarding dialysis-related patient care and equipment issues.
  • Reports any unusual incidents or concerns to the inpatient manager as per company protocols.
  • Complies with the Code of Business Conduct and all applicable regulations.
  • Assists with various projects as assigned by supervisors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This role involves direct patient interaction and requires travel between various healthcare facilities.
  • On-call rotation is required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Potential exposure to infectious materials and diseases is inherent to this position.
  • Physical requirements include lifting and moving patients and equipment, with weights exceeding 200 lbs (with assistance), and handling chemical solutions weighing up to 30 lbs.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides guidance and oversight to Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff, as well as education to ICU personnel regarding CRRT.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must possess current state licensure.
  • Stays informed on advancements in nephrology, particularly concerning inpatient care.
  • Certification in Nephrology Nursing or Apheresis Nursing is highly encouraged.
  • Minimum of one year of RN experience is required, with at least six months of nephrology experience before independent practice.
  • Strong assessment skills related to critically ill patients are essential.
  • BLS CPR certification is required; ACLS CPR certification is preferred.
  • Demonstrates leadership and organizational skills, with a commitment to ongoing education in Renal/Nephrology.
  • Successful completion of Nurses Technical Training is required.
