Position Overview: Autism Support Paraeducator

Location: Kennewick School District

Hours: 6.5 Hours per Day, 180 Days per Year

Role Summary

This role involves providing assistance and supervision to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder who exhibit significant special needs and often utilize behavior as a means of communication within both general and specialized educational environments. The paraeducator will collaborate closely with the special education instructor, fellow paraeducators, and other specialists. Responsibilities will encompass implementing educational instruction under the guidance of the teacher, as well as collecting data and maintaining documentation to track student progress. Additional duties may include assisting with personal care tasks such as toileting, diapering, and meal preparation. All responsibilities will be executed in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Kennewick School District.

Essential Functions

To successfully fulfill this role, the individual must be capable of performing each essential duty effectively. The following requirements are indicative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for this position. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Employment Conditions
  1. High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  2. Possession of an AA degree OR 72 quarter college credits OR 48 semester college credits OR a passing score on the ETS test.
  3. Submission of an unofficial transcript demonstrating AA or equivalent is necessary.
  4. Completion of the Fundamental Course of Study (FCS) within the academic year.
  5. Ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  6. Meeting the physical demands of the position is required.
  7. Passing a basic skills assessment is mandatory.
  8. Completion of Safe Schools Web-Based Training within the first month of employment and annually thereafter.
  9. Successful completion of a background check, including fingerprinting.
  10. Training in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) is required at the next available opportunity.
Qualifications

  4. Ability to assess and address safety concerns effectively.

  8. Basic computer skills for record maintenance and communication are necessary.
  9. First-aid certification or willingness to obtain certification promptly.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree is preferred.
  2. Experience in supervising students during transition periods.
  3. Training and experience with students on the autism spectrum.
  4. Ability to implement behavior intervention strategies effectively.
  5. Documentation of ongoing student behavioral data and reporting to the IEP team.
  6. Physical capability to assist students with mobility issues.
  7. Ability to execute prescribed instructional and behavioral management programs.
  8. Modeling appropriate behaviors and providing consistent behavioral interventions.
  9. Physical ability to lift students as needed.
  10. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
  11. Demonstrated patience and warmth in student interactions.
  12. Flexibility and independence in work approach.
  13. Ability to work effectively in team settings.
  14. Demonstrated capacity to cope with unpredictability and maintain composure in challenging situations.
Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide direct support to students with autism under the supervision of classroom teachers.
  2. Implement specific instructions from teachers regarding data collection and classroom management.
  3. Accurately complete required documentation to ensure compliance with regulations.
  4. Support the physical and health needs of students as necessary.
  5. Assist teachers with clerical and instructional tasks.
  6. Help maintain a safe and positive learning environment through effective supervision.
  7. Engage with students during recess and other activities to promote social interaction.
  8. Support specialists in supervising students as required.
  9. Perform all duties in accordance with district policies, including punctuality and attendance.
  10. Complete other job-related tasks as assigned.
