We are seeking a dedicated Engineering Assistance Specialist to contribute to our Deployables and Undersea Connectivity (DUC) Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. Our mission is to innovate and develop advanced solutions to complex scientific, engineering, and technological challenges in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intelligence Community (IC). The DUC Department focuses on enhancing technical methods and devices for undersea platform connectivity, bridging to the sea-air interface, and facilitating both tethered and untethered communication techniques.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assembly operations and fabrication of facility and testing equipment.
  • Provide insights and execute design and layout of standard facility and testing equipment as instructed.
  • Inspect, test, and calibrate components and equipment as required.
  • Evaluate material and component selection based on operational and performance criteria.
  • Identify system faults and perform adjustments and repairs as directed.
  • Assist senior technical and engineering personnel in collecting, compiling, and archiving test data in laboratory or field settings.
  • Participate as part of a test project support team, potentially taking on selected leadership roles.
  • Develop and supply documentation for task procedures and process evaluations.

Additional Responsibilities for Advanced Positions:

  • Exhibit small team leadership skills, including prioritizing tasks, organizing work, and mentoring junior staff.
  • Engage with sponsors, providing briefings on concepts, testing methodologies, and results.
  • Innovate new techniques or approaches to address complex challenges.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field, along with 4+ years of related experience. Additional experience and/or education may be necessary for higher-level roles.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Proficient in the assembly, disassembly, inspection, testing, design, and troubleshooting of complex electro-mechanical components and systems.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and adhere to detailed electro-mechanical assembly procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Effective writing skills for preparing test procedures and reports.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office and willingness to learn new computer programs.
  • Capability to obtain and maintain a Secret level DOD security clearance.

This position will require full on-site presence and may involve periodic travel to remote locations for testing as part of a collaborative team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.
