We are in search of an Engineering Manager (Space Hardware) to lead the Space Systems Department, providing both personnel and programmatic direction alongside a technically adept team of Directors. This role involves direct reporting to the Vice President and encompasses the oversight of personnel engaged in the design, construction, testing, and operation of advanced satellite technologies. As an Engineering Manager within the Space Systems Department at Umbra, you will collaborate with hardware, software, and product-focused teams, as well as senior management, to significantly influence the advancement of innovative technologies and the professional development of a highly skilled group of engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee personnel and guide programmatic initiatives within the Space Hardware team as part of the Space Systems Department.
  • Support the professional growth and career development of Space Hardware engineers, incorporating feedback from technical leadership.
  • Work closely with project, product, and technical leads to comprehend the scope of work, ensuring high-quality and efficient execution.
  • Manage team members in various aspects, including workload, assignments, support, development, and conflict resolution.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings and performance evaluations with team members.
  • Ensure compliance with legal regulations, security standards, and company policies.
  • Represent team needs and capabilities in technical discussions and collaborate with architects to devise informed solutions.
  • Identify opportunities for process enhancements and implement changes to boost efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Coordinate and report on departmental efforts directly with the VP of Space Systems.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders on headcount planning and recruitment.
  • Utilize agile methodologies to assist in sprint planning, track progress, and manage individual performance.
  • Perform other professional duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in personnel management.
  • 3+ years of experience in project management.
  • 3+ years of experience and/or direct exposure to hardware engineering.
  • Familiarity with traditional project management methodologies and tools, such as critical path analysis, resource loading, and MS Project.
  • Experience with agile project management methodologies and tools, such as Scrum, SAFe, and Jira.
  • Proven ability to develop and nurture a team of engineers.
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, and dynamic environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in personnel management.
  • 5+ years of experience in project management.
  • 5+ years of experience and/or direct exposure to hardware engineering.
  • Proven expertise in utilizing Jira for hardware engineering projects.
  • Degree in engineering or a related STEM discipline.
  • Certifications in PMP (Project Management Professional), CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management), and/or CSM (Certified Scrum Master).
