Substance Abuse Counselor

Middlesex Human Service Agency is seeking a dedicated Substance Abuse Counselor to join our team at Sullivan House. As a key member of our staff, you will play a vital role in advancing our mission to deliver high-quality person-centered services.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct Diagnostic Assessments: Conduct diagnostic assessment interviews and individual counseling sessions to understand clients' needs and develop personalized treatment plans.
- Develop Comprehensive Understanding: Develop a comprehensive understanding of program policies and philosophy of treatment to ensure alignment with our mission.
- Facilitate Counseling Sessions: Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions to support clients in their recovery journey.
- Participate in Supervision and Training: Participate in group supervision, staff meetings, case conferences, and training sessions to enhance your skills and knowledge.
- Write Clinical Assessments: Write clinical assessments, group notes, treatment summaries, and court correspondence to maintain accurate records.
- Conduct Educational Classes: Conduct educational/motivational classes as assigned to support clients' growth and development.
- Engage in Discharge Planning: Engage in discharge planning, aftercare referral, and follow-up with clients to ensure a smooth transition.
- Provide Crisis Intervention: Provide crisis intervention counseling when needed to support clients in times of crisis.
- Provide HIV/AIDS/STD Education: Provide HIV/AIDS/STD education, information, and referral services to support clients' overall well-being.
- Maintain Client Records: Maintain comprehensive client records to ensure accurate tracking of progress.
- Monitor Client Compliance: Monitor client compliance with program rules and provide supervision of client activities to ensure a safe environment.
- Facilitate Urine Drug Screening: Facilitate or supervise urine drug screening and medication administration according to policies and BSAS protocols.
- Maintain Confidentiality: Maintain client confidentiality in compliance with applicable laws to ensure trust and respect.
- Engage in Training and Development: Engage in training to expand knowledge of substance abuse and related disciplines to improve clinical skills.
- Provide Staff Coverage: Provide staff coverage for non-clinical functions when needed to support the team.
- Abide by Agency Policies: Abide by MHSA policies regarding boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical standards to ensure a positive work environment.
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor's or Associate's Degree preferred.
- Licensure: Must be enrolled in the LADC or CADAC program and acquire a license within three years of employment.
- Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of substance abuse, its treatment, and 12-step models; familiarity with Massachusetts DPH/BSAS regulations preferred.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with clients and staff.
- Technical Skills: Experience with spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software to maintain accurate records.
- Certifications: CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification required (MHSA will provide training opportunities).
- Reliability: Reliable attendance and punctuality to ensure a smooth operation.
- Transportation: Valid driver's license and reliable personal transportation required.
- Language Skills: Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Compensation: $25.00 hourly (non-exempt, hourly position).
