School Nurse

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate School Nurse to join our team at Hanover County Public Schools. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality healthcare services to students, promoting their wellbeing, and supporting the educational process.
Key Responsibilities- Provide skilled nursing care for medically fragile children, including tracheostomy care, catheter care, and tube feedings.
- Assist sick or injured students and staff, perform routine and emergency first aid, and administer medication as needed.
- Maintain student health records, review records of entering students for immunizations, and ensure all components of the School Health Entrance Requirement are complete.
- Refers additional health concerns to guidance counselors, school psychologists, physicians, Child Protective Services, school administrators, or health department officials as appropriate.
- Train staff to administer medications under certain circumstances in the nurse's absence or for field trips, and ensure proper documentation.
- Administer individual screening of vision, hearing, height, weight, dental/oral, and scoliosis, evaluate, refer, and follow up as required by Virginia school law and School Board policy.
- Complete necessary forms and procedures for Bloodborne Pathogen exposure incidents and situations related to Workers Compensation as outlined in the Exposure Control Plan, School Board policy, and Regulations.
- Serve as a member of the School Crisis and Child Study Team, participate in wellness programs for staff, and attend all regularly scheduled staff meetings.
- Supply and maintain the school clinic, check first aid supplies and equipment daily, and secure medications including controlled substances as required.
- Provide immunizations as dictated by the School Board.
- Manage outbreaks of infectious illnesses by utilizing knowledge of infectious illness processes with input from physicians, the health department, and district guidelines to determine criteria for school exclusion, and follow health department directives regarding management of such illnesses.
- Compile a list of students with health problems and distribute it to administrators and school personnel.
- Serve as a liaison with public health department, healthcare providers, and other community agencies.
- Ensure compliance with laws protecting the confidentiality of medical information and obtain written consent of parent/guardian to share information.
- Perform clerical duties, including typing, filing, and duplicating related to health services.
- Assist in enforcing rules and discipline, perform student supervision duties as required, advise administrators on appropriate interventions to meet student needs, and advise administrators, teachers, and cafeteria staff on students with food allergies.
- A valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
- A minimum of one year of nursing experience in a school setting or three years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
- Current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid from a recognized provider.
- A Master's Degree or Bachelor's degree in nursing is preferred, as well as three years of experience as a Registered Nurse working with school-aged children.
