About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Ski Safety Coordinator to join our team at the City of Steamboat Springs. As a key member of our Parks and Recreation Department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety of our guests and employees at the Howelsen Hill ski area.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and manage a team of ski patrollers, providing guidance and support to ensure excellent customer service and safety standards.
  • Develop and implement effective risk management strategies to minimize accidents and injuries.
  • Collaborate with the Ski Patrol Director to oversee the ski patrollers, ensuring they are equipped to provide emergency services, including medical care, search and rescue, lift evacuation, and identification and marking of hazardous ski conditions.
  • Ensure all necessary documentation is completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local emergency medical services (EMS) agencies and hospitals to ensure seamless patient transfers and care.
  • Oversee the completion of all necessary pre-season setup, in-season maintenance, and post-season tear-down of mountain, trail, and building areas needed for the operation of the ski mountain.
  • Efficiently and effectively handle all on-mountain emergencies, providing medical care, performing daily trail checks, identifying and marking potential hazards, and modeling and promoting snow sport safety.
  • Coordinate with the Risk Manager to ensure City policies and procedures are being implemented, and work with the City's insurance carrier to ensure their standards are being met.
Requirements
  • Graduation from High School and current Certificate in Outdoor Emergency Care and CPR or equivalent (EMT).
  • Three years of progressively responsible work related to municipal or public safety.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of public risk management and loss control principles and practices.
  • Skill in operating listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to maintain efficient and effective risk management systems and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze risks and exposures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, city officials, vendors, claimants, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Training and/or experience in emergency patient care, mass casualty situations, lift evacuation, and toboggan handling.
  • Advanced skiing ability required to reach injured skiers on all terrain.
What We Offer

The City of Steamboat Springs offers a competitive salary range of $35.85/hour, placement within the range dependent upon qualifications and experience. Seasonal employees who work 20 hours a week or more receive limited benefits as part of their total compensation package.
