An esteemed educational institution is seeking a Library Collections Specialist for a long-term contractual opportunity.
This library is recognized as one of the oldest and most comprehensive art libraries in the United States, housing a collection of over 500,000 volumes that encompass global art and architecture from ancient times to contemporary works, including notable rare book collections.
The Library caters to the university community and scholars worldwide.
Role Summary:
The selected candidate will serve as the primary access point for materials designated for in-library use only, ensuring the safe handling of these resources in temporary locations. Responsibilities include assisting patrons with requests and managing expectations regarding the retrieval of materials due to the current off-site storage of the collection.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide service at designated points, ensuring adherence to library policies while offering basic reference assistance to patrons.
2. Facilitate access to materials that are restricted to in-library use.
3. Support staff workflows as necessary and report maintenance issues in the absence of supervisory personnel.
4. Oversee student assistants and address any staffing concerns at service points.
5. Assist with shelving, stack maintenance, and the management of assigned spaces.
6. Process off-site requests and returns.
7. Contribute to collection development and maintenance efforts.
8. Aid in managing course reserves.
Additional Duties:
As assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of one year of experience in an academic, research, or special library, or a public library with a research or special collections component.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating flexibility and resourcefulness in a dynamic environment.
- Strong organizational skills and a commitment to excellent customer service.
- Capacity to prioritize tasks and adapt to rapidly changing situations.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in desktop productivity software and basic knowledge of computer hardware and imaging equipment.
- Familiarity with bibliographic conventions and experience with online catalogs or databases.
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage time effectively and maintain accuracy in detail-oriented tasks.
- Experience in public service and a strong service orientation.
- Physical capability to lift and shelve books and manage large book trucks.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree.
- Proficiency in bibliographic citations in multiple European languages.
- Experience in arts or humanities library collections or related subject areas.
- Familiarity with integrated library systems.
- Background in antiquarian library or archival collections.
- Intermediate reading proficiency in one or more Romance, Germanic, or other non-English languages is advantageous.
Work Schedule:
This position will involve a full-time commitment for a specified academic period, transitioning to part-time responsibilities thereafter, with a structured daily schedule.
Duration of Assignment:
This role is designed for an academic year, encompassing both full-time and part-time responsibilities throughout the specified duration.
