Job Overview

This position is designed for individuals with mid-level expertise in vehicle maintenance. The technician will primarily operate independently while still having access to guidance from senior technicians when necessary. The focus is on heavy-duty truck maintenance, requiring a solid understanding of equipment and procedures. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to ongoing education to stay current with evolving technologies. Work will be conducted under the supervision of the Shop Foreman.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct inspections, servicing, and repairs on heavy trucks, trailers, and associated equipment.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues with complex electronically controlled diesel engines, modern electrical systems, mobile electronic systems, air and braking systems, and intricate hydraulic systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and diagnose failures in vehicle systems, including body, chassis, and auxiliary systems.
  • Utilize fleet maintenance software to document all work accurately.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of fleet operations to ensure customer satisfaction in repairs.
  • Interpret technical manuals, electrical schematics, and diagnostic software.
  • Perform basic tire services, including repairs and replacements as necessary.
  • Inspect city vehicles to ensure compliance with state safety regulations.
  • Carry out custodial and delivery tasks as required.
  • Adhere to OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies in all work performed.
Qualifications
  • Formal Education/Experience
    • At least two years of experience in an automotive or heavy truck dealership.
    • Formal education that includes basic arithmetic and/or business math.
    • High School Diploma or GED equivalent, along with experience in automotive, truck, or industrial maintenance operations.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License.
  • Class B CDL or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • NC Emission/Safety Inspection License or ability to obtain within 180 days.
Preferred Skills
  • Associate degree in automotive technology.
  • 5+ years of experience in automotive, truck, or industrial maintenance operations.
  • Class B CDL.
  • NC Emission/Safety Inspection License.
Physical and Mental Requirements

Physical Abilities
The role requires the ability to hear and speak effectively to communicate with customers and colleagues. Visual acuity is essential for tasks such as inspecting vehicles and reading documents. The position involves physical demands including:
  • Light Work: Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently.
  • Reaching, handling, and fingering are necessary for the performance of job duties.
Mental Abilities
Strong reasoning skills are necessary to apply logical thinking to various situations. Proficiency in arithmetic and the ability to communicate effectively in English are required for this position.

Environmental Conditions
Work will be performed both indoors and outdoors, exposing the employee to various weather conditions. Employees may encounter hazardous materials and chemicals associated with fleet maintenance, adhering to OSHA standards.
