Position Overview: The Director of Student Engagement will play a pivotal role in advancing the mission of InsideHigherEd and the broader educational community. This position requires the use of data-driven, equity-focused strategies to collaborate with various stakeholders to improve student success initiatives.
Reporting to the senior leadership team, the Director will be instrumental in implementing effective leadership practices and actionable strategies aimed at enhancing student retention from enrollment through to graduation.
This role also involves overseeing the student support alert system, managing daily case loads, and providing training for staff and the campus community on proactive engagement methods, particularly for at-risk student populations.
The ideal candidate will be an energetic, detail-oriented leader who is passionate about promoting a variety of programs and initiatives that foster student learning, belonging, and retention in a supportive environment. This position entails significant student interaction, including occasional evening and weekend commitments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Actively participate as a collaborative member of the student affairs team, contributing to university-wide projects and community development.
- Oversee the student support alert program to enhance retention and success, including:
- Serve as the primary user of the management system, collaborating with IT and academic departments to ensure effective operation.
- Coordinate emergency funding processes and maintain communication with students regarding available resources.
- Provide ongoing training for system users and intervention strategies for staff.
- Manage daily case loads, ensuring timely resolution of student issues and fostering relationships across campus.
- Work alongside institutional research to analyze data and identify areas for improvement in student retention.
- Regularly evaluate the alert program and provide strategic direction for its development.
- Collaborate with campus partners to create a comprehensive student success plan that promotes equitable outcomes.
- Develop and implement new programs and initiatives targeting first-year, second-year, and transfer students, with a focus on underrepresented populations.
- Assist in managing the budget for retention initiatives.
- Supervise graduate assistants involved in student support operations.
- Engage with faculty and advisors to develop targeted intervention strategies that support academic success.
- Coordinate processes related to medical withdrawals and student care plans.
- Contribute to first-year seminar courses and orientation programs.
- Participate in on-call duty rotations to provide crisis response and ensure student safety.
- Support the student alert system and provide resources for students in need.
- Complete additional tasks and projects as assigned by senior leadership.
Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field, with at least 2 years of relevant experience.
- Strong understanding of student life dynamics in a higher education setting and a commitment to enhancing student experiences.
- Exceptional judgment, critical thinking skills, and the ability to navigate complex situations.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusivity.
- Proven experience in customer service and a student-centered approach.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups to implement effective initiatives.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Proficient in managing student issues and crisis situations effectively.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines while demonstrating flexibility.
- Strong interpersonal skills with sensitivity to diverse student needs.
