Position Overview
The Learning Effectiveness Program (LEP) is seeking dedicated tutors for the academic year. We are looking for individuals with a robust academic background in Business, Engineering/Computer Science, Humanities, Languages, Mathematics, Science, and Social Sciences, ranging from entry-level to advanced expertise. This role operates under the guidance of the Tutoring Coordinator and the LEP Associate Director, focusing on empowering students to enhance their confidence, independence, and academic abilities in personalized sessions.

Role Summary
All LEP Tutors are supervised directly by the LEP Tutoring Coordinator. Each tutor will be paired with a Lead Tutor who will serve as a mentor throughout their tenure. The Learning Effectiveness Program is tailored to support neurodiverse learners, requiring skilled tutors to assist in developing both academic and essential life skills necessary for success.

New tutors are required to complete an online orientation and the initial hours of CRLA Certification training. The program is aligned with the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Level I and II Certification standards, and tutors are expected to engage in training activities to uphold these standards. Key training activities include:

  • Completing the LEP New Tutor Orientation to understand the unique needs of LEP students and the principles of Universal Design for Learning.
  • Working towards the completion of 10 hours of CRLA Level I Certification training within the first year.
  • Participating in additional training sessions as directed by the Tutoring Coordinator.
  • Logging a minimum of 25 hours of tutoring during the academic year to fulfill CRLA Level I requirements.
  • Attending one-on-one meetings as requested by the Tutoring Coordinator.

Hours are determined based on student requests throughout the academic quarters.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide effective one-on-one tutoring sessions.
  • Support students in becoming self-sufficient learners.
  • Collaborate with LEP Academic Counselors to address student learning needs.
  • Maintain and update availability in the tutoring scheduling software.
  • Communicate appointment changes promptly.
  • Assist students in clarifying academic questions and understanding material.
  • Offer academic strategies and tools for post-graduation success.
  • Encourage critical thinking regarding course content.
  • Explore innovative learning methods with students.
  • Foster a growth mindset in students to overcome learning challenges.
  • Ensure accountability before and during tutoring sessions.
  • Complete tutoring assessments promptly, detailing session content and outcomes.
  • Maintain consistent communication with the Tutoring Coordinator and Lead Tutor regarding any concerns.
  • Keep the tutoring schedule updated and communicate any cancellations effectively.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Tutoring Coordinator.
  • Adhere to LEP Department expectations and policies, with potential termination for violations or negative feedback.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to effectively tutor in a personalized environment.
  • Understanding of Universal Design for Learning principles for neurodiverse learners.
  • Capability to support students dealing with anxiety and stress.

Qualifications

Student Tutors

  • Current enrollment in relevant courses.
  • Undergraduate students must be at least in their sophomore year.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 in the subject area to be tutored, along with a recommendation letter from a faculty member.
  • Willingness to adapt tutoring strategies based on student needs.

Community Tutors

  • At least one year of experience in the subjects to be tutored.
  • Willingness to adapt tutoring strategies based on student needs.

Preferred Qualifications

Student Tutors

  • Graduate-level students.
  • Previous tutoring experience.
  • Experience with neurodiverse student populations.

Community Tutors

  • Prior tutoring experience.
  • Experience with neurodiverse student populations.

Work Schedule

This is a part-time, non-benefited position with flexible hours. Tutors set their availability based on student requests and will only be compensated for actual tutoring time. Additional paid opportunities may include preparation, administrative tasks, and professional development activities. Tutors cannot exceed 40 hours per week or 80 hours per pay period.

All new tutors must complete the required training before commencing tutoring.

Physical Requirements
