At Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital, the Anesthesia Support Specialist (ASS) role is essential in providing assistance to anesthesia professionals and collaborating with the interprofessional healthcare team, directly impacting patient care throughout various procedures.

This position involves aiding in anesthesia-related tasks, resolving issues with anesthesia equipment, and managing patient monitoring systems across all anesthetizing environments such as operating rooms, catheterization labs, endoscopy suites, and other designated areas.

The ASS is knowledgeable about all anesthetizing environments, anesthesia supplies, and related equipment, ensuring that all necessary items are prepared, accessible, and functioning optimally at all times.

Fosters a positive workplace atmosphere and contributes to a dynamic, team-oriented unit that supports one another in achieving departmental goals.

Engages with all members of the interprofessional healthcare team by effectively communicating and documenting relevant patient care information in a thorough manner. SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Executes anesthesia support tasks in all monitoring and anesthesia settings, including but not limited to operating rooms, catheterization labs, intensive care units, and other areas where anesthesia is administered.

Completes comprehensive patient monitoring and anesthesia equipment setup in procedure rooms.

Prepares, calibrates, and verifies the functionality of all monitoring and anesthesia equipment prior to patient connection.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Maintains cleanliness and disinfection of equipment and workspaces between patients, adhering to infection control protocols and departmental procedures.

Organizes workflow, addresses challenges, and manages ongoing priorities with minimal supervision, seeking guidance when necessary.

Reports near misses and promptly inputs errors into the tracking system to enhance processes and identify trends. Contributes to the identification of corrective actions and improvement initiatives.

Supports the achievement of departmental and hospital objectives for quality and safety.



FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Ensures that anesthesia workstations and areas are promptly restored, organized, and ready for subsequent use after each case, including proper storage of monitor cables, turning off unused anesthesia gases, restocking supplies, and returning equipment to designated locations.

Utilizes resources efficiently with a focus on value creation. Demonstrates self-motivation in managing time effectively, minimizing incidental overtime, and prioritizing daily responsibilities while assisting colleagues as needed.


GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Participates in committees and task forces as assigned, ensuring that action items are completed appropriately. Follows up on assignments as necessary to guarantee completion.

Seeks opportunities for professional development beyond baseline competencies, focusing on continuous growth as a Technician/Technologist. Engages in career discussions with management and consistently updates the Development Plan.

EDUCATION
High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)

WORK EXPERIENCE
One year of hospital experience if not certified; no experience if certified through the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists & Technicians (ASATT)

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED
BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA)

OR
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - PREFERRED
ASATT - Certified Anesthesia Tech

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills assessments and performance evaluations.
Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.
Possesses basic computer knowledge; operates multiple computer systems including Hospital/Anesthesia systems and Microsoft Office products to maintain patient documents.
Progression towards organizational and problem-solving skills as evidenced by the capacity to prioritize multiple tasks and role components and actively participate in problem-solving with minimal supervision.
Progression towards demonstrating time management skills.
Ability to progress towards independence and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team, and patients and their families.
