Position Overview
The primary responsibility of the Homeless Education Liaison is to guarantee that the educational system and its collaborators effectively identify and enroll children and youth facing homelessness, ensuring they receive equitable opportunities for academic success. This role encompasses duties mandated by relevant federal and state legislation concerning the education of homeless children and youth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the main contact for the development and execution of policies related to homeless students, ensuring compliance with educational laws and accurate representation in communication materials.
  • Establish and maintain effective policies to provide services to eligible homeless students that are on par with those offered to their peers, including access to educational programs, special education, and transportation services.
  • Monitor and address district-wide challenges regarding the identification and support of homeless students.
  • Collaborate with schools to identify and train coordinators responsible for homeless education, facilitating ongoing communication and resource sharing.
  • Prepare and deliver training materials for district staff on relevant educational laws and best practices.
  • Create and distribute culturally and linguistically appropriate outreach materials to inform the community about the educational rights of homeless children and youth.
  • Engage with families of homeless students to ensure they are aware of available educational opportunities and support services.
  • Provide training for school counselors to assist unaccompanied homeless youth in accessing educational benefits and resources.
  • Conduct assessments to ensure that students and families have the necessary resources and support, collaborating with community organizations for donations.
  • Ensure preschool-age homeless children are connected to early childhood education programs.
  • Work with leadership to facilitate fee waivers and streamline reimbursement processes for educational expenses.
  • Mediate disputes related to enrollment and services according to established appeal processes.
  • Track attendance and performance data for homeless students to inform evidence-based decision-making and collaborate with educators to enhance student outcomes.
  • Coordinate with state education officials to ensure compliance with statutory requirements and report relevant data as necessary.
  • Build partnerships with community agencies to enhance service delivery for homeless students and their families.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to secure funding and resources for services aimed at supporting homeless students.
  • Engage with other local school systems on inter-district matters concerning homeless education.
  • Foster relationships with community representatives and officials to support families experiencing homelessness.
  • Adhere to all policies regarding equal employment and non-discrimination, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, social work, education, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in student support or counseling.
  • Strong skills in assessment, case management, and customer service.
  • Knowledge of educational laws related to homelessness and effective intervention strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience in training and presentations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
