Position Overview
The primary responsibility of the Homeless Education Liaison is to guarantee that the school system and its partners effectively identify and enroll children and youth facing homelessness, ensuring they receive equitable opportunities for academic success. This role encompasses duties mandated by relevant federal and state legislation aimed at supporting homeless students.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the central contact for the development and execution of policies related to homeless students, ensuring compliance with educational laws.
- Establish and maintain effective policies to provide services to eligible homeless students that are on par with those offered to their peers.
- Monitor and address district-wide challenges concerning the identification and support of homeless students.
- Collaborate with schools to identify and train coordinators responsible for homeless education, facilitating communication and resource sharing.
- Prepare and deliver training materials for district staff on relevant educational laws and their implications.
- Create and distribute culturally appropriate outreach materials to inform the community about the educational rights of homeless children.
- Engage with families of homeless students to ensure they are aware of educational opportunities and support services.
- Train school counselors to assist unaccompanied homeless youth in accessing educational benefits and resources.
- Conduct assessments to ensure that students and families have access to necessary supplies and support.
- Facilitate access to preschool programs for homeless children and ensure appropriate referrals.
- Work with leadership to streamline processes for fee waivers and reimbursements related to educational expenses.
- Mediate disputes regarding enrollment and transportation services in accordance with established procedures.
- Collaborate with coordinators to track attendance and academic performance of homeless students, using data to inform decisions.
- Maintain partnerships with community agencies to enhance service delivery to homeless students and their families.
- Seek funding and resources to support programs aimed at assisting homeless students.
- Coordinate with other educational institutions on issues affecting homeless students.
- Engage with community representatives and officials to foster collaboration in supporting homeless families.
- Ensure compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies in all activities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; a Master's degree is preferred.
- Experience in student counseling or support program implementation.
- Knowledge of educational laws related to homelessness and intervention strategies.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in standard office software applications.
Work Schedule
This position is full-time and eligible for benefits.
