Position Overview
The primary responsibility of the Homeless Education Liaison is to guarantee that the school system and its collaborators effectively identify and enroll children and youth facing homelessness, ensuring they have equitable access to educational opportunities. This role encompasses duties mandated by relevant federal and state legislation regarding the education of homeless children and youth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the main contact for the development and execution of policies related to homeless students, ensuring compliance with applicable educational laws.
  • Establish and maintain effective procedures to deliver services to eligible homeless students, comparable to those provided to their peers.
  • Oversee and address district-wide challenges in identifying and serving homeless students.
  • Collaborate with schools to identify and train coordinators responsible for homeless education, facilitating communication and resource sharing.
  • Prepare and deliver training materials for district staff on relevant educational laws and practices.
  • Create and distribute outreach materials that are culturally and linguistically appropriate to inform the community about the rights of homeless students.
  • Engage with families of homeless students to ensure they are aware of available educational resources and support.
  • Train school counselors on resources available for unaccompanied homeless youth, ensuring they receive necessary support.
  • Conduct assessments to identify the needs of homeless students and their families, coordinating with community organizations for support.
  • Ensure preschool-age homeless children are connected to early education programs.
  • Work with school leadership to streamline processes for fee waivers and reimbursements related to educational expenses.
  • Facilitate resolution of disputes regarding enrollment and services for homeless students.
  • Monitor attendance and academic performance of homeless students, collaborating with educators to enhance outcomes.
  • Maintain partnerships with community agencies to ensure comprehensive support for homeless families.
  • Seek funding and resources to support programs for homeless students.
  • Coordinate with other school systems on issues affecting homeless students.
  • Provide training and support to community members and officials working with homeless families.
  • Adhere to all relevant laws and policies regarding equal employment and non-discrimination.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as counseling, social work, or education; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • Experience in student support services or related fields.
  • Strong skills in assessment, case management, and customer service.
  • Knowledge of educational laws and intervention strategies related to homelessness.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in standard office software applications.
