Internal Controls Specialist for ESG Initiatives

Job Overview

In this position, you will contribute significantly in the following areas:
  • Oversee internal control mechanisms associated with our GHG (Greenhouse Gas) and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) frameworks.
  • Collaborate closely with the ESG Strategy team to guarantee adherence to regulatory mandates and corporate standards, while pinpointing opportunities for enhancement and efficiency.
  • Design and execute internal control structures for GHG and ESG reporting systems to assure precision, dependability, and compliance with legal stipulations.
  • Regularly assess and refine processes linked to GHG and ESG reporting systems to boost effectiveness, accuracy, and transparency.
  • Examine and uphold internal control documentation (including process maps, flowcharts, and control matrices) to ensure conformity with corporate standards and regulatory requirements regarding GHG and system controls.
  • Lead initiatives for process enhancement to fortify GHG and ESG system controls.
  • Establish connections with business leadership to facilitate practical internal control enhancements and management implementation strategies concerning GHG and ESG issues.
  • Work in partnership with auditors and Accounting Policy to steer internal control development and rectify deficiencies.
  • Deliver training on GHG and ESG system internal controls to business stakeholders, focusing on internal controls and corporate policies.
  • Foster and guide team members to cultivate a robust internal controls team that supports various business segments, regions, or distributors.
Key Responsibilities

To excel in this role, you will require the following competencies:
  • US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP): Implement US accounting standards to ensure compliance and effectively communicate implications.
  • Business Process and Internal Control Risk Assessment: Analyze business processes, identify risks, and apply process improvements through internal control frameworks.
  • Financial Internal Controls: Evaluate controls, devise remediation strategies, and adapt to evolving business requirements.
  • Ensures Accountability: Hold yourself and others accountable for commitments.
  • Business Insight: Utilize market knowledge to further organizational objectives.
  • Manages Conflict: Address conflicts in a constructive manner.
  • Directs Work: Provide guidance and eliminate obstacles.
  • Global Perspective: Consider global implications in decision-making processes.
Qualifications

Education, Licenses, Certifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related discipline is mandatory.
  • Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or equivalent is required.
Experience:
  • Substantial relevant professional experience, including supervisory roles, is essential.
  • Experience in managing internal controls related to GHG (Greenhouse Gas) and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) systems is preferred.
  • Familiarity with GHG accounting protocols (e.g., WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol) and ESG reporting frameworks (e.g., SASB, TCFD, SDGs) is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements pertaining to GHG emissions, climate risk, and ESG disclosure (e.g., SEC, EPA, EU regulations) is beneficial.
  • Experience with sustainability management software, ERP systems, and data management tools for GHG and ESG reporting is desirable.
  • In-depth understanding of Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHGs and/or regulatory experience is valuable.
  • Experience with system implementation and/or Business Process Transformation (BPT) in the past is preferred.
  • Experience in the emissions and compliance sectors is a plus.
