Position Overview
The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for dedicated individuals to fill the role of a Small Animal Emergency Technician. This position is essential in providing technical assistance to veterinary faculty and advanced veterinary students within the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Critical Care sections of our Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist clinicians in the reception of emergency cases, ensuring proper triage and admission of patients.
- Perform critical care nursing tasks in the ICU or treatment areas as instructed by clinical faculty.
- Educate senior veterinary students on essential technical and practical skills related to emergency and critical care during both regular and after-hours shifts.
- Participate in on-call duties and cover ICU shifts, including during holidays.
- Support other departments as directed by supervisory staff.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a Veterinary Technician in the Commonwealth of Virginia. A solid understanding of fundamental nursing skills, experience in placing intravenous catheters, and familiarity with critical care nursing in a veterinary context are essential. Knowledge of CPR, strong communication abilities, and the physical capability to handle and move up to 50 lbs. are also required. Rabies prophylaxis will be provided by the employer.
Preferred Qualifications
A minimum of two years of experience in a veterinary clinical environment, particularly in emergency and critical care, is preferred. Certification as a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Emergency and Critical Care is also desirable.
Compensation
This position falls under Pay Band 4, with a starting salary of $42,500, commensurate with experience.

Regular appointment.
