Mission: Arlington County is committed to fostering a resilient, safe, and prepared community. Our objective is to collaborate on emergency management and homeland security initiatives, ensuring readiness to respond to, recover from, and mitigate the impacts of disasters and emergencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and evaluate various open-source information channels, including law enforcement and fire department communications, traffic and surveillance feeds, news outlets, and social media platforms to identify real-time incidents and potential threats.
  • Disseminate timely and actionable alerts and reports to County personnel across various departments (e.g., Police, Fire, Parks and Recreation, Public Schools) and the community, ensuring the information is accurate and relevant to the intended audience.
  • Assess the significance of local and national incidents to provide strategic guidance to County agencies on dynamic situations, including resource coordination and deployment.
  • Utilize multiple communication channels, including emergency alert systems and social media, to relay timely and precise information during emergencies and critical public safety events.
  • Provide essential support during the activation of the Emergency Operations Center, demonstrating competence under pressure.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for the County's emergency alerting and warning systems, assisting both County employees and the public.
  • Enhance the Unit's mission by refining existing processes and implementing innovative strategies.

Qualifications:

  • A proactive approach with strong skills in research, analysis, and communication.
  • Exceptional writing abilities to produce briefing documents, situational reports, emergency alerts, and impact analyses tailored for various stakeholders.
  • Proven experience in open-source research and real-time reporting and alert dissemination.
  • Ability to manage high volumes of information and prioritize tasks in time-sensitive environments.
  • Capability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, vocational school, or GED.
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience in public safety, emergency management, situational awareness, or a related field.
  • Experience with tools for emergency notifications, record keeping, data collection, and analysis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in fields such as National Security, Political Science, Geographic Information Systems, Counterterrorism, Journalism, Homeland Security, Emergency Management, or related disciplines.
  • Experience with open-source intelligence (OSINT), social media monitoring, counterintelligence, business continuity, and disaster recovery.
  • Familiarity with emergency management technologies, including social media monitoring platforms, live camera surveillance tools, and various local, state, and federal communication systems.

Additional Information:

  • Successful candidates must complete a pre-hire background check, including a criminal record and polygraph examination.
  • Obtain necessary certifications within three (3) months of employment.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.
  • This position requires mandatory flexibility for 24/7 shift coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Due to the nature of the Department, this position may require work outside of normal hours and during emergencies.
