Position Overview

This role is part of a bargaining unit and entails a minimum of five days of onsite work every two weeks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct independent reviews of assigned cases to ensure completeness of briefing schedules and the presence of all necessary documents for appeal resolution.
  • Perform comprehensive research on statutes, regulations, judicial decisions, and legislative history relevant to legal issues, providing a detailed analysis of each case.
  • Offer legal advice to the Board, utilizing existing precedents and applying statutory construction rules to formulate reasoned analyses of factual and legal matters.
  • Support and potentially attend oral arguments in unique cases, preparing written recommendations and decisions in alignment with Board directives.
  • Mentor junior attorneys, guiding them in case development, drafting legal documents, and ensuring quality control of their work products.
  • Coordinate project assignments, monitor ongoing case work, and proactively identify and resolve issues that may hinder case completion.
  • Act as a liaison with the Clerk's Office, providing necessary legal insights to facilitate case processing.
  • Maintain meticulous records of case assignments and deadlines to ensure timely processing.
  • Assess the classification of cases referred to the Office of General Counsel based on complexity and other relevant factors.
  • Provide counsel and training to newly assigned attorneys on legal standards, precedents, and Board policies.
  • Engage in special projects, including the development and revision of policy directives and training materials.
Qualifications

Applicants must possess a professional law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) and be a member in good standing of the bar of a court of general jurisdiction. For the GS-14 level, a minimum of three years of progressively responsible legal experience post-law school is required, including specialized experience in labor law.
