Position Overview

This role is situated within the U.S. Department of the Interior, specifically in the Alaska Regional Office, under the Natural Resources Division.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • This is a term position lasting over one year, with an initial commitment of at least 13 months, potentially extendable up to a decade.
  • Term positions do not grant permanent status within the Federal service.

Job Duties

This position entails a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Gathering geological, geomorphic, and hydrological field data to support regional and park initiatives.
  • Collecting high-precision GPS data in accordance with established protocols.
  • Utilizing software such as ArcPro to visualize and analyze collected field data.
  • Creating comprehensive reports, delivering presentations, and developing web content related to natural resource projects.

Employment Conditions

  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
  • Appointment is contingent upon a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Compliance with the Selective Service Registration Act is required for male applicants.
  • Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program is necessary.
  • A valid driver's license is required within 30 days of hire for operating a government or private vehicle as part of official duties.
  • On-call work, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime, may be necessary.
  • A one-year trial period is mandatory.
  • Travel away from home may be required, potentially up to 15 nights per month.
  • Training and maintenance of a government charge card for travel and/or purchasing may be necessary.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds is required.
  • Applicants must be at least 16 years old and meet specific educational criteria.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be fulfilled by the closing date of this announcement. Relevant experience will be credited accordingly. To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, candidates must meet the following:

  • Basic Requirement: A completed four-year degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics, including 24 semester hours in physical science or related engineering fields.
  • Experience: A minimum of one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-07 level, including activities such as collecting geologic and hydrologic data and integrating this data into GIS systems.
  • Education: Completion of at least two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree in a related field.
