Position Overview:
At Houston Methodist, the Lead Nurse II Emergency Services role is designated for a licensed professional Registered Nurse (RN) who operates at the Competent to Proficient level according to Benner's model of clinical practice.

This position is pivotal in fostering an environment that prioritizes the management and delivery of safe patient care. Key Responsibilities:
In addition to fulfilling the clinical responsibilities of a nurse, the Lead Nurse II also serves as a mentor and coach to departmental staff, enhancing their skills and knowledge.

The role encompasses providing nursing care to a diverse array of patients, conducting thorough nursing assessments, assisting with examinations and treatments, and maintaining accurate medical records. This position also involves coaching and mentoring staff in clinical and professional practices.

Leadership and Team Dynamics:
The Lead Nurse II exemplifies compassionate communication with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team, taking on leadership responsibilities that contribute significantly at the bedside, within the unit, across service lines, and throughout the institution.

Responsibilities may include leading unit governance activities, assessing practice-related needs and improvement opportunities, serving as a clinical resource for both unit and hospital staff, and coordinating educational initiatives in collaboration with management.

People Essential Functions:
This role models effective leadership skills to foster team dynamics and build cohesive teams through problem-solving, coaching, and staff development. The Lead Nurse II encourages efficient communication among team members, ensuring that patients and families are integral to their care plans.

Input into staff performance evaluations is provided as appropriate, and the Lead Nurse II acts as a mentor and resource for unit staff, overseeing students and new employees during their preceptorships.

Conflict resolution skills are essential, as the Lead Nurse II identifies organizational conflicts and applies effective tools to address concerns with patients, families, physicians, and other healthcare team members.

Service Essential Functions:
This position leads the standards of patient and family-centered care as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. The Lead Nurse II proactively recognizes situations requiring immediate action, such as emergency codes, and mentors others in specialty populations.

Ongoing interactions with patients, families, and staff are maintained to enhance patient care through leader rounding, ensuring effective collaboration with other departments regarding patient process issues.

Quality and Safety Functions:
The Lead Nurse II adheres to the standards of care related to the nursing process, actively participating in initiatives to improve nurse-sensitive quality indicators and patient safety goals.

Coordination of nursing care throughout shifts is essential, considering patient acuity and staff skill levels to ensure all patient needs are met. The Lead Nurse II also facilitates seamless patient flow and leads the delivery of quality family-centered care throughout the continuum.

Financial Responsibilities:
Participation in daily care coordination rounds is expected to facilitate patient progression, ensuring that any concerns identified by the team are addressed. The Lead Nurse II manages productivity in line with staffing requirements and provides input on unit resource utilization.

Growth and Innovation:
This role encourages the identification and implementation of innovative solutions for practice changes aimed at improving patient care or unit operations. The Lead Nurse II incorporates evidence-based practices and supports change initiatives while adapting to unexpected changes.

Continuous personal and staff development is emphasized, with the Lead Nurse II serving as a clinical resource and developing educational resources to enhance quality and professional practice.

Education Requirements:
A Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited School of Nursing is required.

Experience Requirements:
A minimum of two years of clinical nursing experience demonstrating progressive leadership skills is essential.
