The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Baseball Pitching Coach to join our team. As a member of our Intercollegiate Athletics department, you will play a critical role in the success of our baseball program.

Job Summary

The Baseball Pitching Coach will be responsible for providing teaching, coaching, and technical expertise to student-athletes to enable them to compete at their highest competitive potential. This includes overseeing the safety and well-being of student-athletes, making strategic decisions in contest situations, and assisting the Head Coach in evaluation of student-athletes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teaching and Coaching:
    • Utilize sound teaching techniques in the conduct of game preparation and practice sessions;
    • Assist in making strategic decisions in contest situations;
    • Effectively prepare and organize pre-season, in-season, and post-season conditioning programs and practice sessions;
    • Oversee strength and conditioning development of the athletes;
    • Assist the Head Coach in evaluation of the student-athletes;
    • Coach pitchers in their development and manage their weight training;
    • Be aware and maintain a safe and healthy environment for the student-athletes.
  • Department, University, Conference, and NCAA Compliance:
    • Abide by and promote the aims, goals, and objectives established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach;
    • Abide by and promote the policies, guidelines, rules, regulations, and criteria established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach for the student-athletes;
    • Know, understand, and ensure that the student-athletes abide by all University, Atlantic 10, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations;
    • Know, understand, and abide by all University, A10, and NCAA rules and regulations;
    • Be aware and abide by the rules of confidentiality (Buckley Amendment);
    • Understand and abide by proper procedures of due process in dealing with student-athletes and staff;
    • Follow administrative procedures established by the University and written up in the Department Staff Handbook;
    • Assist the Head Coach in developing and implementing the overall recruiting strategy to effectively recruit the best student-athletes within admissions, financial, and regulatory constraints established by the University, A10, and NCAA.
  • Act as Team Liaison to:
    • Equipment office staff to order, monitor, and control all team equipment;
    • Business Office and Coaches Support Assistant on program operations, organization, planning, and team travel;
    • Academic Services (study hall and tutoring); and
    • Monitor the recruiting side of the program and manage the scholarship by first getting approval from the Head Coach.
  • Fundraising:
    • Participate in fundraising efforts and unique events; and
    • Help seek opportunities for new speakers at annual First Pitch Dinner.
  • Other Duties:
    • Perform other duties as requested by the Assistant Vice President/Director of Intercollegiate Athletics or Sport Administrator.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree;
  • Experience organizing, developing, and executing recruitment plans;
  • Collegiate baseball pitching coaching experience or equivalent playing and skills instruction experience;
  • Working knowledge of NCAA and Conference (A10) rules and regulations;
  • Ability to organize, develop, and execute recruitment plans;
  • Physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students;
  • Ability to travel and work weekends and holidays;
  • CPR/First Aid or willingness to obtain; and
  • Valid Driver's License or the ability to obtain one prior to the start date.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in related field;
  • Pitching coaching experience specifically at the Division 1 level; and
  • Knowledge of recruitment techniques and proven ability to bring in high-level prospects.
