About the Position

The Commonwealth of Virginia's Intercollegiate Athletics department is seeking a highly qualified Assistant Coach to join our Men's Basketball team. As a key member of our coaching staff, you will be responsible for providing teaching, coaching, and technical expertise to our student-athletes, enabling them to compete at their highest potential.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement game preparation and practice sessions, utilizing sound teaching techniques to enhance student-athlete performance.
  • Assist in making strategic decisions during contests, ensuring the team's success.
  • Design and oversee pre-season, in-season, and post-season conditioning programs and practice sessions, focusing on strength and conditioning development.
  • Evaluate student-athletes, providing constructive feedback to improve their skills.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy environment for student-athletes, adhering to all relevant regulations and guidelines.
  • Implement game plans, offering recommendations for in-game adjustments to optimize team performance.
  • Present scouting information to the coaching staff and team, ensuring everyone is informed and prepared.
  • Coordinate opponent clip edits with the Video Coordinator, enhancing the team's preparation.
  • Develop and execute recruitment plans, identifying and attracting top talent to the program.
  • Build relationships with prospective student-athletes, parents, and high school coaches, fostering a positive and supportive environment.
  • Hold on-campus and off-campus visits with prospects and their families, providing a comprehensive experience.
  • Abide by and promote the aims, goals, and objectives established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach, ensuring alignment with departmental priorities.
  • Know, understand, and assure that student-athletes comply with all University, Atlantic 10, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations.
  • Understand and abide by proper procedures of due process in dealing with student-athletes and staff, maintaining a fair and respectful environment.
  • Follow administrative procedures established by the University and the Department Staff Handbook, ensuring compliance and efficiency.
  • Assist the Head Coach in developing and implementing the overall recruiting strategy, effectively recruiting top talent within admissions, financial, and regulatory constraints.
  • Assist the External Unit in developing and executing engaging social media content, promoting the program's brand and values.
  • Participate in fundraising, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) efforts, and special events, contributing to the program's growth and success.
  • Utilize the Transfer Portal to study and evaluate potential recruits, identifying top talent for the program.
Required Qualifications
  • Advanced degree or training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree.
  • Demonstrated experience coaching at the college level and/or collegiate/professional playing experience in the sport of basketball.
  • Working knowledge of NCAA, Conference (A10), and state rules and regulations.
  • Solid demonstrated knowledge of the sport, including rules, strategies, and techniques.
  • Ability to organize, develop, and execute recruitment plans.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire players to achieve their full potential.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Valid driver's license: must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.
