About the Position

The Assistant Coach will provide teaching, coaching, and technical expertise to enable student-athletes to compete at their highest potential. This role also involves overseeing the safety and well-being of assigned student-athletes and acting on behalf of the Head Coach in their absence. The Assistant Coach will assist the Head Coach in all aspects of a highly competitive Division I program, including game preparation, practice sessions, and strategic decision-making.

Responsibilities
  1. Utilize sound teaching techniques in game preparation and practice sessions.
  2. Assist in making strategic decisions in contest situations.
  3. Effectively prepare and organize pre-season, in-season, and post-season conditioning programs and practice sessions.
  4. Oversee the strength and conditioning development of athletes.
  5. Assist the Head Coach in evaluating student-athletes.
  6. Maintain a safe and healthy environment for student-athletes.
  7. Assist with implementing game plans and offering recommendations for in-game adjustments.
  8. Present scouting information to the coaching staff and team.
  9. Coordinate opponent clip edits with the Video Coordinator.
  10. Organize and plan workouts.
  11. Serve as defensive special team coordinator and lead on-court player development in alignment with the Head Coach's philosophy.
  12. Build relationships with prospective student-athletes, prospects, parents/families, and high school coaches.
  13. Hold scheduled on-campus and off-campus visits with prospects and their families.
  14. Abide by and promote the aims, goals, and objectives established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach.
  15. Abide by and promote the policies, guidelines, rules, regulations, and criteria established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach for student-athletes.
  16. Know, understand, and assure that student-athletes abide by all University, Atlantic 10, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Rules and Regulations.
  17. Know, understand, and abide by all University, A10, and NCAA Rules and Regulations.
  18. Aware of and abide by the rules of confidentiality (Buckley Amendment).
  19. Understand and abide by proper procedures of due process in dealing with student-athletes and staff.
  20. Follow administrative procedures established by the University and the Department Staff Handbook.
  21. Assist the Head Coach in developing and implementing the overall recruiting strategy to effectively recruit the best student-athlete within admissions, financial, and regulatory constraints established by the University, A10, and NCAA.
  22. Assist the External Unit with best practices and trends to help develop and execute engaging social media content.
  23. Assist in the strategy of external recruiting announcements and basketball marketing/communication content.
  24. Serve as liaison to: Equipment office staff to order, monitor, and control all team equipment; Business Office and Coaches Support Assistant on program operations; logistics, planning, and team travel; and Academic Services (study hall and tutoring); attains SAT/ACT scores, applications, transcripts.
  25. Participate in fundraising, NIL efforts, and special events.
  26. Utilize the Transfer Portal to study and evaluate potential recruits.
Required Qualifications
  1. Advanced degree or training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree.
  2. Demonstrated experience coaching at the college level and/or collegiate/professional playing experience in the sport of basketball.
  3. Working knowledge of NCAA, Conference (A10), and state rules and regulations.
  4. Solid demonstrated knowledge of the sport, including rules, strategies, and techniques.
  5. Ability to organize, develop, and execute recruitment plans.
  6. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.
  8. Ability to motivate and inspire players to achieve their full potential.
  9. Demonstrated leadership qualities.
  10. CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  11. Valid driver's license: must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.

  1. Coaching experience in a NCAA Division I level program.
  2. Knowledge of recruitment techniques and demonstrated ability to bring in high-level prospects.
