Position Overview:

The Water Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the efficient operation and routine maintenance of specialized equipment in a treatment facility. This includes managing pumps, motors, and chemical preparation systems, as well as ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain operational records and prepare routine and special reports as required.
  • Inspect mechanical equipment to ensure proper functionality, performing necessary lubrication and minor repairs.
  • Conduct field and laboratory tests to monitor and control treatment processes, making adjustments as needed.
  • Operate and assist in the maintenance of water systems and treatment plants.
  • Ensure the production of safe drinking water in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Perform daily operational procedures and routine calibrations to optimize treatment processes.
  • Monitor equipment performance using manual and electronic systems.
  • Carry out preventative and corrective maintenance tasks.
  • Assist in the development and effectiveness of the preventative maintenance program.
  • Manage inventory and ordering of chemicals and supplies.
  • Utilize computer systems for operational tasks and reporting.
  • Maintain accurate shift logs and administrative documentation.
  • Adhere to established safety protocols and standard operating procedures.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Technical knowledge and hands-on experience in advanced water treatment operations.
  • Experience in maintenance and operational tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Strong laboratory skills and experience with sampling techniques.

Skills and Abilities:

  • In-depth understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and chemical principles.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations related to water quality.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities effectively.
  • Competence in troubleshooting and repairing water treatment equipment.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Certifications:

  • Pre-employment drug screening and physical abilities tests are required.
  • New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection T-2 License, or the ability to obtain it within one year.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting, bending, and climbing.
  • Capability to handle tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
