Senior Portfolio Manager

In this pivotal role, reporting directly to the PMO Vice President, the Senior Portfolio Manager will serve as a vital partner and advocate for both business and technology teams. The focus will be on crafting a cohesive view of the enterprise portfolio of initiatives that drive strategic benefits, aimed at enhancing growth and operational efficiency.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in solution delivery and will leverage a diverse skill set in methodologies including business process optimization, comprehensive project lifecycle management (spanning iterative, waterfall, and agile approaches), financial oversight, and a strong understanding of technology integration into business strategy. Close collaboration with business and technology teams will be essential to develop a unified perspective of the enterprise, ensuring that business and technology elements are effectively aligned to create value.

Project & Portfolio Management Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with PMO leadership to ensure adherence to established project management and technology protocols; analyze instances of non-compliance and identify opportunities for enhancement.
  • Develop project and portfolio definitions/charters that align with strategic objectives, outlining business benefits, financial implications, technology design, and overall value creation.
  • Engage with business and technology teams to evaluate current capabilities and outline high-level requirements.
  • Transform internal client needs into actionable outcomes by actively participating in the creation of realistic and well-structured project plans.
  • Work alongside PMO leaders to optimize resource planning, acquisition, and utilization for both employees and contractors.
  • Provide governance, reporting, and oversight for the portfolio to all stakeholders, ensuring project objectives are met within the approved timeframe, scope, and budget.
  • Utilize data effectively to manage the portfolio concerning resources, timelines, and scope, while also addressing risks and limitations.
  • Focus on metrics to enhance delivery benchmarks annually, being responsible for measuring quality, timeliness, and benefits realized across all projects within the portfolio.

Leadership, Collaboration & Communication Responsibilities

  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of the portfolio, being prepared to discuss value, financials, and progress with minimal notice for various audiences, including executive leadership.
  • Manage the vision of the portfolio diligently, reminding stakeholders of any deviations from goals while anticipating risks and connecting the dots to mitigate uncertainties.
  • Effectively communicate and advocate for initiatives; understand stakeholder motivations, listen to their concerns, and address them through influence.
  • Exhibit conflict management skills, providing a calming presence to project teams.
  • Be invited by project teams and key business stakeholders to contribute to significant project decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with technology and PMO teams to understand, communicate, and manage the interplay between business and technology within the portfolio.
  • Build and sustain strong relationships with technology partners, business stakeholders, and executive sponsors of initiatives.
  • Ensure all necessary stakeholders are informed and involved in key decisions regarding projects and the overall portfolio.
  • Promote the significance of project management and serve as a brand ambassador for the project delivery team.

Team Development

  • Mentor project teams and provide real-time feedback to enhance performance.
  • Accountable for the successful delivery of projects within the assigned portfolio.
  • Guide team members in developing business analysis and project management skills, applying industry best practices for continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with the PMO team to establish annual performance objectives and actively communicate progress against these goals, ensuring each team member has a comprehensive individual development plan.

Job Requirements

  • PMP certification is mandatory.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, with a focus on strategic solution delivery.
  • Experience managing programs with budgets exceeding $10 million.
  • A Master's degree in Strategy, Finance, Technology, or Operations is preferred.
  • Certifications in Life Insurance, Annuities, and Retirement from recognized industry organizations are advantageous.
  • Possess executive presence and exceptional communication skills.
  • Familiarity with operational functions within the life insurance or annuity sectors is preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of technology terminology and the ability to interface with IT teams.
  • Strong financial acumen to report on budgets for large portfolios.
  • Awareness of industry trends and regulations to ensure accurate project governance and financial reporting.
  • Ability to prioritize initiatives based on understanding of Business/IT projects.
  • Capability to assess short and long-term impacts of various options and make informed decisions based on cost-benefit analysis and business acumen.
  • Proficiency in forecasting resource and financial trends based on current environmental conditions.
  • Skill in anticipating, understanding, and communicating risks while managing change to minimize team anxiety and potential losses for the organization.
