JOB SUMMARY

The Physician Assistant in Intensivist Medicine is a licensed and certified healthcare professional who provides direct patient care and holds delegated prescriptive authority. This role is recognized as an independent billing provider within the healthcare system, compliant with Medicare and Medicaid regulations. The Advanced Practice Provider delivers medical services aligned with the scope of practice defined by the supervising physician. In this critical care environment, the provider is responsible for managing patients through various duties, including patient assessments, procedures, and hospital admissions and discharges.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE

  • Conducts thorough physical and mental evaluations of patients by performing comprehensive or focused medical examinations and obtaining detailed medical histories.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures to evaluate patient health and identify care needs.
  • Prescribes and administers medical therapies and treatments, ensuring adherence to established protocols while considering efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness. Advises on lifestyle modifications to mitigate health risks.
  • Develops and implements detailed, outcomes-oriented treatment plans based on patient evaluations, evidence-based practices, and collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary teams as necessary. Monitors and assesses patient responses to care.
  • Provides guidance to patients and their families regarding medical procedures, health management, medication regimens, nutrition, and wellness strategies. Educates patients about potential side effects and interactions of prescribed medications.
  • Maintains accurate and comprehensive records of patient treatment plans and outcomes. Refers patients for consultation when issues exceed the provider's scope of practice.
  • Offers specialized consultation services for conditions pertinent to the provider's expertise.
  • Performs specific invasive procedures as permitted by the supervising physician and within the provider's proficiency.
  • May participate in hospital rounds, assist with patient admissions and discharges, and provide on-call support as needed.
  • May be required to fulfill patient care responsibilities beyond the standard schedule based on departmental needs.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

  • Comprehensive knowledge of medical practices and techniques for diagnosing and treating injuries, diseases, and disorders, including understanding symptoms, treatment options, and preventive measures.
  • Familiarity with methods and procedures for diagnosing and rehabilitating physical and mental health issues.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems and relevant software.
  • Ability to create and execute effective treatment plans focused on patient outcomes.
  • Competence in counseling patients regarding medical and psychological conditions and treatment strategies.
  • Ability to interpret and assess laboratory and diagnostic results.
  • Current licensure as a Physician Assistant in Texas.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Current certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nights only
  • 7 on/14 off schedule
  • Shift from 7 PM to 7 AM
  • No on-call duties

QUALIFICATIONS

  • EDUCATION - Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • EXPERIENCE - Less than 1 year of relevant experience
  • CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION - Licensed Physician Assistant (PA)
  • ACLS certification required within 30 days of hire
  • BLS certification required within 30 days of hire
