JOB SUMMARY

The Physician Assistant in Intensivist Medicine is a licensed and certified healthcare professional who provides direct patient care and holds delegated prescriptive authority. This role is recognized as an independent billing provider within the healthcare system, in accordance with the relevant regulatory boards. The Advanced Practice Provider delivers medical services based on the defined scope of practice established by the supervising physician. Working in a critical care environment, the provider manages patients through various responsibilities, including patient rounds, procedural tasks, and overseeing hospital admissions and discharges.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE

  • Evaluates the physical and psychological status of patients by conducting thorough physical examinations and gathering medical histories.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures to identify patient health issues and needs.
  • Prescribes and administers medical therapies and treatments, ensuring adherence to established protocols while considering efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness. Provides recommendations for behavioral modifications to address health risks.
  • Develops and executes comprehensive treatment plans based on patient evaluations, evidence-based practices, and collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary teams as necessary. Monitors patient responses to care and adjusts treatment strategies accordingly.
  • Advises patients and their families on medical processes, health management, medication regimens, nutrition, and wellness strategies. Educates patients about potential side effects and interactions of prescribed medications.
  • Keeps detailed records of patient treatment plans and outcomes. Refers patients for additional consultation when necessary.
  • Offers specialized consultation services for conditions relevant to the provider's expertise.
  • Performs specific invasive procedures as authorized by the supervising physician.
  • May conduct hospital rounds, assist with patient admissions and discharges, and provide on-call support as needed.
  • May be required to extend patient care duties beyond the standard schedule based on departmental needs.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

  • In-depth knowledge of medical practices and techniques for diagnosing and treating various health conditions.
  • Familiarity with methods and procedures for assessing and rehabilitating physical and mental health issues.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities.
  • Critical thinking and advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems and related software.
  • Capability to create and implement effective patient treatment plans.
  • Ability to counsel patients on medical and psychological conditions and treatment strategies.
  • Competence in interpreting and evaluating diagnostic tests.
  • Current licensure as a Physician Assistant in Texas.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nights only
  • 7 on/14 off schedule
  • 7 PM to 7 AM shifts
  • No on-call responsibilities

QUALIFICATIONS

  • EDUCATION - Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • EXPERIENCE - Less than one year of relevant experience
  • CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION - Valid Physician Assistant license
  • ACLS certification required within 30 days of hire
  • BLS certification required within 30 days of hire
