Position Overview


The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is tasked with ensuring the efficient and effective daily management of the hospital, in collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). This role encompasses direct oversight of various departments and functions within the hospital.

The COO's primary responsibilities include:

  • Enhancing Patient Safety and Quality: Cultivating a clinical environment that prioritizes safety and efficiency, leading to consistent and favorable patient outcomes.
  • Service Excellence: Fostering a culture that engages and supports employees, medical staff, patients, and the broader community.
  • Financial Stewardship: Implementing cost-effective operational practices that align with financial performance goals.

Throughout their tenure, the COO will adhere to the behavioral standards of Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) and comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and policies.

Key Responsibilities

The COO's essential functions include:

  • Hospital Performance: Accountable for the operational performance of designated departments, developing strategies to meet performance objectives.
  • Accreditation Compliance: Ensuring adherence to standards set by accrediting bodies, maintaining readiness for evaluations.
  • Employee and Patient Engagement: Enhancing loyalty and engagement among staff and patients.
  • Financial Effectiveness: Driving a culture of efficiency and cost-effectiveness to meet financial targets.
  • Medical Staff Relations: Building and maintaining productive relationships with medical staff and providers.
  • Market Positioning: Participating in strategic planning to enhance the hospital's relevance in the community.
  • Corporate Citizenship: Upholding ARH's commitment to effective collaboration and resource utilization.
  • Community Engagement: Developing positive relationships with community stakeholders.

All responsibilities are subject to change, and the COO will be accountable for adapting to new expectations as they arise.

Qualifications

Education:

  • A master's degree in Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited institution.

Minimum Work Experience:

  • A minimum of three to five years in senior-level positions within a healthcare setting.
