POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Accountant is responsible for executing professional accounting tasks that involve governmental (fund) accounting. This includes overseeing government contracts and managing general accounting records, journals, and ledgers. The role requires analyzing financial transactions for precision and appropriate coding, as well as preparing financial statements and reports for both internal and external stakeholders. The Accountant will also coordinate activities with accounting assistants, following established procedures while exercising initiative and independent judgment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Review and process contractor and administrative expenses to ensure adherence to contract and grant regulations, policies, and procedures, as well as accurate cost classification and timely payments. Manage contract closeouts and maintain relevant documentation.
  • Maintain, analyze, and prepare accounting records, journals, and general ledgers as required or assigned.
  • Code and record cash deposits while keeping appropriate documentation.
  • Compile external reports as mandated by grantors (state, local, foundations).
  • Generate monthly internal financial reports that include budget comparisons.
  • Reconcile supportive services and training in accordance with the general ledger and support database.
  • Prepare and send monthly Accounts Receivable invoices to clients.
  • Conduct monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Perform internal audits of transactions, including a quarterly review of each program's revenues, expenditures, assets, and liabilities. Notify program and accounting supervisors of any necessary budget modifications or journal adjustments.
  • Engage with program staff and/or managers as needed to discuss financial reports and activities.
  • Calculate quarterly infrastructure cost-sharing with required partners and prepare related journals and invoices.
  • Maintain the Fixed Asset listing and calculate monthly depreciation.
  • Calculate, document, and manage monthly prepaid and accrued expenses.
  • Prepare reconciliations and documentation for the annual audit.
  • Actively contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or a related field is required.
  • Two to four years of experience in fund accounting within a non-profit or governmental setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient computer skills to effectively use word processing, database, and spreadsheet software.
  • Strong mathematical skills to perform moderately complex calculations accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial records and other statistical data, maintaining complex financial accounting records and generating reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for effective communication in both oral and written forms.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills that foster a positive work environment and teamwork.
  • Effective planning and time management skills with the ability to adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, state and local agencies, and the public.
  • Capacity to focus on projects requiring attention to detail, with the ability to manage pressures related to deadlines.
  • Physical ability to sit for extended periods and manage visual strain from prolonged computer use.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Standard office setting with minimal discomfort from noise, dust, and similar factors.
  • Occasional local travel may be necessary.
