POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Accountant is responsible for executing professional accounting tasks utilizing governmental fund accounting. This includes overseeing government contracts and maintaining as well as preparing comprehensive accounting records, journals, and ledgers. The role involves analyzing financial transactions for precision and appropriate coding, as well as preparing financial statements and reports for both internal and external stakeholders. The Accountant will also coordinate activities with accounting assistants, following established procedures while exercising initiative and independent judgment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Review and process contractor and administrative expenses, ensuring adherence to contract and grant regulations, policies, and procedures, while maintaining accurate cost classifications and timely payments.
  • Maintain, analyze, and prepare accounting records, journals, and general ledgers as required.
  • Code and record cash deposits, maintaining appropriate documentation.
  • Compile external reports as mandated by grantors (state, local, foundations).
  • Generate monthly internal financial reports with budget comparisons.
  • Reconcile supportive services and training records with the general ledger and support database.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly Accounts Receivable invoices to clients.
  • Conduct monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Perform internal audits of transactions, including quarterly analyses of each program's financial activities.
  • Engage with program staff and managers to discuss fiscal reports and activities as needed.
  • Calculate quarterly infrastructure cost-sharing with partners and prepare related journals and invoices.
  • Maintain a Fixed Asset register and calculate monthly depreciation.
  • Record and manage monthly prepaid and accrued expenses.
  • Prepare reconciliations and documentation for annual audits.
  • Actively participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or a related field is required.
  • Two to four years of experience in fund accounting within a non-profit or governmental setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency in word processing, database, and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Strong mathematical skills for performing moderately complex calculations accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial records and maintain complex accounting records.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Organizational skills that contribute to a productive work environment and the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Strong planning and time management skills, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail and the capacity to manage projects under pressure.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods and manage visual strain from prolonged computer use.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Standard office setting with minimal discomfort from noise or environmental factors.
  • Occasional local travel may be necessary.
