About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Geologist Engineering Intern to join our team at Arup. As a Geologist Engineering Intern, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including geotechnical investigations, subsurface information database management, and laboratory testing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare desk study reports on sites due for development
  • Use and manage subsurface information database systems
  • Observe construction site works and geotechnical investigation
  • Log and describe properties of geological (soil and rock) materials to aid design and construction works
  • Prepare laboratory test schedules
  • Interpret subsurface conditions and understand their impact on design and construction
  • Carry-out shallow and deep foundation design, slope stability calculations, and seismic assessments
  • Support the completion of temporary support-of-excavation designs, including for basements, shafts, and cut-and-cover tunnels/subway stations
  • Conduct preliminary ground movement predictions, hydrogeological impact and building damage assessments
  • Collaborate in multidisciplinary teams (e.g. structural, civil, bridges) to design for subsurface elements
  • Observe the installation of subsurface elements during construction
Requirements
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering/Engineering Geology or Civil Engineering with a focus in Geotechnical Engineering
  • Pursuing a Master's or PhD Degree strongly preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills essential for team-based working
  • Excellent planning and organization skills required for our fast-paced environment
  • Highly motivated, proactive, and willing to take on new challenges
  • Able to prioritize effectively, balance assigned work, and exceptional organization skills required for our constantly evolving environment
  • Presentation skills with colleagues and clients of all levels
  • Proficient in developing code and common coding languages
  • Advanced courses in foundations, soil mechanics, and rock mechanics preferred
  • Practice in slope stability analysis software (SlopeW, Slide, UTexas, etc.) preferred
  • Exposure and interest in programming (Python, Visual Basic, Rhino, Leapfrog, etc.) preferred
  • Knowledge of common types of shallow and deep foundation and retaining structures, including installation methodology preferred
  • Knowledge in geological and geotechnical interpretation with understanding of geological origin and process preferred
  • Interest in the field of underground engineering preferred
  • Active in engineering community through professional societies preferred
  • Evidence of personal investment in academic or extracurricular field preferred
