Position Overview:
Under general oversight, this role involves executing engineering tasks of moderate complexity in both field and office settings, adhering to established engineering methodologies and protocols. The incumbent will apply engineering principles to address challenges in civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental, or transportation engineering.


Key Responsibilities:


1. Develops, evaluates, and verifies standard studies, calculations, designs, drawings, sketches, and plans for diverse engineering initiatives utilizing AutoCAD and other relevant software.


2. Conducts field assessments of existing infrastructures to ascertain the need for future construction, repairs, or maintenance; undertakes preliminary field studies and surveys, gathering data essential for design and drafting processes; analyzes field data alongside office research to identify necessary corrective actions.


3. Performs routine inspections of ongoing construction and repair projects to ensure compliance with established plans, specifications, and regulatory codes; documents and tracks progress at various job sites.


4. Compiles, organizes, and maintains engineering data, records, and reports.


5. Prepares documentation including reports, contract specifications, material lists, cost estimates, schedules, and progress payments.


6. Generates departmental reports addressing field conditions, project advancements, study outcomes, future development plans, and other pertinent matters.


7. Provides written and verbal responses to inquiries from various stakeholders, including other agencies, contractors, and the public.


8. May oversee junior engineers, student trainees, and related personnel in a limited capacity.


9. Drafts correspondence, minutes, and reports concerning engineering policies, procedures, standards, environmental impact assessments, appeals, and related project activities; may assist in legislative processes for engineering-related matters.


10. Engages with professional engineering personnel, contractors, and the public on engineering issues.


11. Performs additional duties as necessary.


Qualifications:
  • A. A baccalaureate or graduate degree in an engineering discipline such as Biochemical, Chemical, Civil, Environmental, Industrial, Mechanical, or Sanitary Engineering.


B. A valid Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate from the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).


C. A minimum of one (1) year of verified professional experience in Environmental engineering, engaging in at least three of the following activities:

  • Assisting in the preparation of studies, designs, drawings, and plans using AutoCAD and other software.
  • Collecting data to evaluate project requirements and define scope through site visits, surveys, and document reviews.
  • Preparing contract specifications, material lists, cost estimates, schedules, and progress payments.
  • Drafting engineering reports and documentation regarding field conditions and project progress.
  • Conducting data analyses and calculations to determine material or equipment specifications.
  • Performing inspections of construction and repair projects to ensure adherence to plans and codes.


Note: Internships, drafting experience, and student design work do not qualify as professional engineering experience.


OR

  • Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering from the California Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.


Additional Information:
Most positions require a valid California driver’s license. All applications are reviewed to confirm that candidates meet the minimum qualifications outlined in the job advertisement.


Flexible Staffing:
Permanent incumbents in this role may advance to Associate Engineer positions upon obtaining a Professional Engineer license and completing two years of satisfactory service within the same department.
