Job Responsibilities:

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the skilled operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities. This role requires a commitment to ensuring the efficient functioning of the plant, which operates continuously, necessitating shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays. The operator will report directly to the Superintendents and the Public Works Director.


Key Duties:
  • Conduct readings and perform various tests on incoming and outgoing sewage.
  • Maintain accurate records and generate reports promptly.
  • Perform operational checks on plant equipment, pump stations, and lift stations.
  • Clear grease, debris, and sand from wet wells; maintain and clean pumps.
  • Collect wastewater samples and assist in analyzing suspended solids.
  • Handle hazardous materials safely and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Respond to emergencies as required.
  • Execute additional tasks as assigned by the Public Works Director.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of mechanical equipment and machinery in sewage treatment.
  • Familiarity with sewage treatment processes and basic chemistry.
  • Awareness of safety regulations and occupational hazards.
  • Ability to inspect and identify issues in machinery and equipment.
  • Proficient in reading meters and maintaining operational records.
  • Capable of operating relevant equipment effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to foster positive relationships with colleagues and the public.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of two years of experience in wastewater operations, or a suitable combination of education and experience.


Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid State of Florida Class 'C' Wastewater Certificate is required.

Physical Requirements:
  • Normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and communication abilities.
  • Ability to perform tasks at elevated levels and in various environmental conditions.
  • Physical capability to exert up to 60 pounds of force regularly.

Work Environment:

Exposure to hazardous conditions, chemicals, and high noise levels is expected. The role may require working in varying light conditions and adverse weather.
