POSITION SUMMARY

Under supervision, the role involves performing construction, maintenance, and repair tasks on water and wastewater utility system equipment and company facilities as instructed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assist in diagnosing utility system issues and resolving electrical, mechanical, and piping challenges as per training and direction from the Lead Maintenance Mechanic. Engage in the repair and analysis of mechanical equipment such as pumps and motors, and aid in the installation of new utility system enhancements and related projects.
  2. Adhere to maintenance schedules for equipment and vehicles, ensuring that all necessary maintenance tasks are executed. Respond to emergency situations as assigned.
  3. Support the maintenance of plant equipment and distribution facilities; may operate a company vehicle, maintaining its cleanliness, upkeep, and organization of tools and inventory.
  4. Collaborate with fellow maintenance staff to optimize the use of labor and supplies for daily operations.
  5. Maintain accurate maintenance records, including work orders and related documentation.
  6. May assist in additional tasks such as meter readings, cleaning, painting, and material handling.
  7. Act as a trainee in the operation of heavy machinery, including backhoes and excavators, if designated.
  8. Conduct inspections of lift stations, ensuring proper cleaning, level control settings, and documentation of operational metrics, while performing routine maintenance tasks.
  9. Perform inspections of manholes, completing reports and meeting established quantity requirements.
  10. Carry out fire hydrant maintenance, including flushing, greasing, and painting, while documenting each hydrant's status and ensuring compliance with quantity standards.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have the physical capability to work in wastewater treatment facilities, with the strength and stamina to perform medium to heavy labor, navigate confined spaces, and operate various hand and power tools. The position requires visual acuity for reading materials and gauges, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in person and via telephone or radio. Fieldwork involves frequent walking to identify potential issues or hazards. Candidates must be able to lift and carry materials weighing up to 75 pounds, with heavier items handled using appropriate equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees primarily work outdoors and occasionally indoors, facing exposure to loud noises, extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and various mechanical and electrical hazards. Interaction with upset staff and public representatives may occur, necessitating the interpretation and enforcement of departmental policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Motor Vehicle Operator License
  • Demonstrated mechanical, electrical, or plumbing aptitude

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Class A CDL with tanker endorsement
  • Water Distribution License is advantageous
  • Expertise in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing skills
  • Experience with control work is a plus
