Key Responsibilities:
(1) Deliver high-quality, patient-focused healthcare to adults aged 18 and above, including seniors over 65, as designated by the Associate Chief of Staff for Primary Care.
(2) Evaluate Veterans using advanced clinical judgment and thorough physical assessments to identify acute, chronic, and non-acute health issues.
(3) Guarantee the provision of safe, efficient, and superior healthcare services within the department.
(4) Conduct appropriate initial evaluations, treatments, and consultations, ensuring documentation aligns with current VHA Directives and policies.
(5) For inpatient admissions, facilitate physician-to-physician discussions regarding the necessity for admission, encompassing diagnoses, assessments, and recommendations.
(6) Exhibit sound clinical and administrative decision-making skills that uphold the integrity of the medical profession and enhance the essential role of physicians.
(7) Engage in daily patient care, which includes regular collaboration with nursing staff, coordinating consultations, and facilitating diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Additional Essential Functions:

Effective communication with patients and their families, providing patient education, planning for discharges, and liaising with outpatient providers. This includes arranging follow-ups, preparing discharge instructions, reconciling medications, and ensuring seamless communication during transitions of care.

(9) Ensure a comprehensive sign-out to the incoming physician to facilitate an informed transition of care; collaborate with admitting physicians and consultants to develop diagnostic and treatment plans for all patients awaiting admission.
(10) Maintain necessary clinical privileges to fulfill the responsibilities of the position within the Primary Care Service.

Work Schedule:
Monday to Friday, afternoon shifts. Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Available.
Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment): Available.

Paid Time Off:
Up to 55 days of annual paid time off (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and a potential 5-day paid absence for Continuing Medical Education).

Retirement Benefits:
Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with contributions up to 5% by the VA. Insurance: Comprehensive federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance (many federal insurance programs are transferable into retirement).

Licensure: Must possess one full and unrestricted medical license from any U.S. State or territory.

Continuing Medical Education:
Potential reimbursement of up to $1,000 per year. Malpractice: Liability protection with tail coverage provided. Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restrictions on moonlighting.

Employment Conditions:
U.S. Citizenship is required; non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited per VA Policy.
All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in designated testing positions are subject to urinalysis for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
Selective Service Registration is mandatory for males born after 12/31/1959. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
Participation in a probationary period may be necessary.

Must pass a pre-employment physical examination.

Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is also required for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP).


Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional qualifications specified in the job announcement.

Applicants pending completion of training or licensure may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled.

Currently employed physicians in the VA who met the qualifications for appointment under previous standards at the time of their initial appointment are considered to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

Basic Requirements:
U.S. Citizenship is mandatory. Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited per VA Policy.
Education:

Must hold a Doctor of Medicine degree or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.

The degree must have been obtained from an institution with accreditation in place for the year of completion.


Approved Schools:

Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year the degree was granted.

For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2), facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met certification requirements and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate if claimed by the applicant.



Note:
The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment of a physician graduate from a non-approved school if assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position without patient care responsibilities, only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
