Key Responsibilities:
(1) Deliver comprehensive, patient-focused healthcare to adults aged 18 and older, including seniors, as designated by the Associate Chief of Staff for Primary Care.
(2) Evaluate Veterans using advanced clinical skills and judgment, identifying both acute and chronic health issues.
(3) Guarantee the provision of safe, efficient, and high-quality medical services within the department.
(4) Conduct initial assessments, treatments, and consultations, ensuring documentation aligns with current VHA Directives and policies.
(5) Facilitate physician-to-physician discussions for inpatient admissions, covering diagnoses, assessments, and recommendations.
(6) Exhibit strong clinical and administrative decision-making abilities that enhance the profession's reputation.
(7) Provide daily patient care, collaborating with nursing staff, coordinating consultations, and managing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Additional Essential Functions:

Communicate effectively with patients and their families, educate patients, plan discharges, and liaise with outpatient providers. This includes arranging follow-ups, preparing discharge instructions, conducting medication reconciliations, and ensuring smooth transitions of care.

(9) Ensure a thorough hand-off to the incoming physician for an informed transition of care; collaborate with admitting physicians and consultants to develop diagnostic and treatment plans for patients awaiting admission.
(10) Maintain the necessary clinical privileges to perform assigned duties within the Primary Care Service.

Work Schedule:
Monday to Friday, afternoon shifts. Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Available.
Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment): Available.

Leave Benefits:
50-55 days of annual paid time off, including 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and a potential 5-day paid absence for Continuing Medical Education (CME).

Retirement Benefits:
Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% contributions by the VA. Insurance: Comprehensive federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance options available (many can be carried into retirement).

Licensure: A full and unrestricted medical license from any U.S. State or territory is required.

Continuing Medical Education (CME):
Potential reimbursement of up to $1,000 per year. Malpractice: Liability protection with tail coverage provided. Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restrictions on additional employment.

Employment Conditions:
U.S. Citizenship is required; non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited per VA Policy.

All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis for illegal drug use prior to appointment.

Applicants who refuse testing will be denied employment with the VA. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.

Must pass a pre-employment physical examination.

Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is also required for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP).


Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement.

Applicants pending completion of training or licensure may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled.

Current VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under previous standards at the time of their initial appointment are considered to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:
U.S. Citizenship is required. Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited per VA Policy.
Education:

Doctor of Medicine degree or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.

The degree must have been obtained from an institution accredited during the year of study completion.


Approved Schools:

Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).

For foreign medical graduates, verification with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) is required to confirm certification requirements.



Residency Training:

Completion of residency training or its equivalent in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification eligibility.



English Language Proficiency:

Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.



Preferred Experience/Qualifications:
Board Certified or Board Eligible.
