Position Overview

This role qualifies for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a reimbursement initiative for student loan payments. Candidates must satisfy individual eligibility criteria as per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of their appointment. Responsibilities

The duties include:

(1) Delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to adults aged 18-65 and seniors aged 65 and above, as designated by the ACOS of Primary Care.

(2) Evaluating Veterans through advanced clinical judgment and physical assessment skills to identify acute, non-acute, and chronic health issues.

(3) Ensuring the provision of safe, efficient, and high-quality healthcare within the department.

(4) Guaranteeing appropriate initial evaluations, treatments, consultations, and documentation in line with current VHA Directive and VHNIHCS policies on Emergency Medicine.

(5) For inpatient admissions, facilitating physician-to-physician discussions regarding the necessity for admission, including diagnoses, assessments, and recommendations.

(6) Demonstrating sound clinical and administrative decision-making skills that enhance the profession's reputation and contribute to the distinctive role of physicians.

(7) Daily patient care involves regular collaboration with nursing staff, coordinating consultations, and facilitating diagnostic studies and therapeutic procedures.

(8) Other essential responsibilities include effective communication with patients and their families, patient education, discharge planning, and liaising with outpatient providers to arrange follow-ups and prepare discharge instructions.

(9) Ensuring a comprehensive sign-out to the oncoming physician for a smooth transition of care; coordinating with the admitting physician and consultants to develop diagnostic and treatment plans for all patients awaiting admission.

(10) Maintaining appropriate clinical privileges to fulfill the responsibilities of the assignment within the Primary Care Service.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday afternoons.

Incentives: Authorized for Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus) and Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment).

Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of annual paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and potentially 5 days of paid absence for CME).

Retirement Benefits: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% contributions by VA.

Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).

Licensure: Must possess one full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory.

CME: Possible reimbursement of $1,000 per year.

Malpractice Coverage: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.

Contractual Obligations: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restrictions on moonlighting.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens per VA Policy.
  • Education. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
  • Licensure and Registration. Physicians must possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training. Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • English Language Proficiency. Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience/Qualifications: Board Certified or Board Eligible.
