Position Overview

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include:

(1) Delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to adults aged 18-65 and seniors aged 65 and above, as directed by the ACOS of Primary Care.

(2) Evaluating Veterans using advanced clinical judgment and physical assessment techniques to identify acute, non-acute, and chronic health issues.

(3) Ensuring the provision of safe, efficient, and high-quality healthcare within the department.

(4) Conducting appropriate initial evaluations, treatments, and consultations, along with documentation that aligns with current VHA Directive and VHNIHCS policies regarding Emergency Medicine.

(5) For inpatient admissions, facilitating a physician-to-physician discussion regarding the necessity for admission, including diagnoses, assessments, and recommendations.

(6) Demonstrating effective decision-making skills, both clinical and administrative, which enhance the profession's reputation and contribute to the distinctive role of physicians.

(7) Daily patient care includes regular collaboration with nursing staff, coordinating consultations, and facilitating diagnostic studies and therapeutic procedures.

(8) Other essential duties encompass communication with patients and their families, patient education, discharge planning, and liaising with outpatient providers to arrange follow-ups, prepare discharge instructions, and ensure medication reconciliation.

(9) Ensuring a thorough hand-off to the oncoming physician to guarantee an informed transition of care; coordinating with the admitting physician and consultants to organize diagnostic and treatment plans for all patients pending admission.

(10) Maintaining appropriate clinical privileges to fulfill the responsibilities of the assignment within the Primary Care Service.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday afternoons.

Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Authorized.

Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment): Authorized.

Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of annual paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and a possible 5-day paid absence for CME).

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% contributions by VA.

Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).

Licensure: One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory.

CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement.

Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restrictions on moonlighting.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • Participation in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP).
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Licensure and Registration. Physicians must possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training. Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • English Language Proficiency. Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience/Qualifications: Board Certified or Board Eligible.
