Under general supervision, the role involves executing a range of skilled maintenance and repair tasks on both gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, as well as light and heavy construction machinery. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.


Education and Experience:


A High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution is required, along with a minimum of one (1) year of experience as a skilled mechanic specializing in the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of gasoline and diesel vehicles and/or heavy machinery. This experience should encompass both routine and specialized tasks, which may include work on emergency service vehicles and various types of trucks and heavy construction equipment.


Required Licenses or Certifications:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License
Completion of pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
Capability to maintain the necessary driver's license as per job assignment

This position is classified as safety-sensitive and is subject to random drug testing in accordance with County policy regarding drug and alcohol use.

The technician will conduct equipment inspections, perform diagnostics, identify mechanical issues, and carry out preventative maintenance and repair tasks on assigned gas and diesel machinery. On-site service calls may be required, along with test driving vehicles and transporting equipment to the shop for repairs.

Servicing duties include oil changes, lubrication, and tire repair or replacement on County vehicles and equipment.

Responsibilities also involve replacing or repairing defective components such as wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, and steering mechanisms.

Tasks include overhauling, repairing, and adjusting engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches; tuning engines, replacing ignition components, and cleaning and adjusting carburetors; diagnosing and repairing computerized control systems, ignition systems, power steering, and cooling systems.

Preparation and replacement of components like generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches are also part of the role. The technician will repair, adjust, and replace brake systems, including disc, hydraulic, and air brakes, as well as machining or cutting rotors and drums. Additional tasks may include tire mounting, dismounting, balancing, minor paint and body repairs, and steam cleaning of equipment and tools.

Welding, fabricating, and assembling parts for automotive and heavy equipment is required, along with assisting in the procurement and inventory management of maintenance parts and materials. Maintaining accurate records of work, time, and materials is essential.

Utilization of personal computers and work management software for entering vehicle and equipment records is necessary. The technician will also be responsible for cleaning and maintaining tools, equipment, and storage areas to ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Collaboration with other mechanics in performing mechanical repairs may be required. Other job-related tasks may be assigned as needed.
