Senior Manager, Mechanical Engineering - Avionics

At Vast, we are dedicated to pioneering a future where humanity thrives in space. Our focus is on developing artificial gravity space stations, enabling extended stays in space without the detrimental effects of zero-gravity. Our first crewed habitat, Haven-1, is set to become the world's inaugural commercial space station, launching into low earth orbit in the near future. Our team is fully committed to achieving our mission with safety and precision.

We are in search of a Senior Manager of Mechanical Engineering - Avionics, who will report directly to the Senior Vice President of Avionics. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the mechanical design and integration of electronic enclosures, assemblies, and cable harnesses for our space vehicles and associated systems.

This position is a full-time, exempt role based at our operational headquarters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a dedicated team focused on vehicle components and subsystems, from initial requirements through to installation. Assign projects to team leads and project managers, ensuring a balance between project demands and team capabilities.
  • Ensure adherence to established standards, processes, and tools for the design, analysis, and harnessing of complex avionics enclosures.
  • Foster team growth and development, which includes performance management, training, career advancement, recruitment, and mentorship.
  • This position encompasses both managerial and technical responsibilities, requiring significant input, guidance, review, and oversight of your team's outputs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a B.S. degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering, or a comparable STEM discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing technical teams and/or leading functional groups, with accountability for the technical quality of work and employee development.
  • At least 5 years of experience in mechanical design, electronic hardware packaging, and analysis or testing related to structural integrity, vibration, thermal evaluation, and cable harness design.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Experience in designing robust electronic enclosures and/or cable harnesses for space, commercial aviation, or similar high-performance sectors.
  • Ability to establish uniform procedures and methodologies.
  • Capacity to lead in a dynamic, flexible environment, with self-direction and the ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Proficient in communicating complex technical topics to diverse audiences.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional partners within the organization, including executive management, procurement, production, quality assurance, and materials & processes.
  • Mentor and guide engineers and technicians.

Salary Range:

$159,000 - $205,000 USD

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Base salary will vary based on job-related knowledge, education, skills, experience, business needs, and market demand. Salary is one aspect of our comprehensive compensation package.
